Which Stuffit? - System 7 on a Mac Classic II
Posted by: Paralel on 2010-03-09 14:49:06
I've managed to round up the last four versions of Stuffit Expander from across the internet for System 7 and I was wondering which ones I should actually keep and install in order to open up the majority of compressed files/software I will come across on the internet for a Mac Classic II.

The four versions I have are 4.0.1, 4.5, 5.1.3, & 5.5.

Any insight into this subject would be appreciated.

Here are the four installers for the Stuffit Expander versions mentioned above in DSK format:

Stuffit Expander 4.0.1:

Stuffit Expander 4.5:

Stuffit Expander 5.1.3:

Stuffit Expander 5.5:

Figured someone might find them useful for something.

I use 5.5 exclusively on my 7.1 IIci. Works fine.

I've read that there was some kinda of format switch between Stuffit 4.x & 5.x which lead to some compatibility problems when Unstuffing files Stuffed with 4.x software using the 5.x series expanders. Any truth to this?

There was a format switch after StuffIt 1.51. And other versions of StuffIt have had format changes as well.

As such, will Stuffit Expander 5.5 handle compressed files Stuffed with a pre-5.x Stuffit application appropriately?

Seems to.

Ditto. I gave up even trying to download that file. Any chance of getting it posted somewhere non-broken?

There's a copy of 5.5 on pure-mac.com .

Spent all afternoon trying to download some old favourites to the TAM. I downloaded 5.5, as 4.5 had problems with all of the files I tried. 5.5 worked perfectly.
