| Installing OS 9 on Clamshell iBook | |
| Posted by: Hugh on 2010-02-14 01:57:46 I wonder if anyone can help me here - I have an Indigo Clamshell and it appears the firmware is not the latest so I'm trying to update it. I have a 20gb hard drive with Tiger installed and a retail OS 9.2.1 disc. Steps taken so far:- 1) Booted to iPartition disc and shrunk the Tiger partition to make free space 2) Booted to OS 9 disc; can't initialise drive 3) Booted back into iPartition, made free space into MacOS extended partition entitled OS_9 4) Booted into OS 9 disc again; still can't initialise without wiping the whole hard drive At this point I am stumped - I don't want to lose my Tiger install if I can help after all the hard work setting it up - is there any non-destructive way of installing OS 9 to the partiton I have set up ready? I have a complete backup of Tiger on a firewire drive (using Carbon Copy Cloner) so if there are no other options I could reformat the hard drive, install OS 9 to a small partition and restore Tiger to the larger one, but it's always one of those 'will it really work' things you need to take a deep breath before trying. If that's the case, then how much space do I need for OS 9.2.1 + maybe a few apps, and I assume it needs to be the first partition; my Tiger restore on the second? Thanks very much Cheers 🙂 Hugh | |

I suggest, before you go back, that you try this:http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page the PowerPC version. If that doesn't work set that Clam into Target Disk, hold down the T at startup, and go on another Mac computer boot it from the OS9 disk and install it on the Clam that way. Last if all else fails use SysRescue, to erase the whole thing and make 2 partitions. (It has to be MacOSExtended) Install OS9 then Tiger. Good luck! | |
| Posted by: Hugh on 2010-02-14 10:22:28 Thanks, downloading SystemRescueCD PPC now in hopes, but I already have iPartition which has probably achieved all I can do in that direction. My partitionng is already done, it's just that OS 9 is wanting to initialise the hard drive before it will mount, probably because iPartition boots to a version of OS X which OS 9 does not understand. In initialising I have to erase and format the whole disc, hence my problem with loss of my Tiger installation. Thanks for trying, looks like I may have to start again then restore my backups. | Posted by: PowerPup on 2010-02-14 21:30:44 Is there a certain reason you want Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X to be on separate partitions? Installing Mac OS 9 on the same partition would be the easiest way. Sounds like you shouldn't have to do any initializing if you've already formatted the second partition with iPartition. Does "OS_9" show up on the desktop when you boot from the Mac OS 9 CD? You should be able to just run the installer and be able to choose either the Mac OS X partition or the "OS_9" partition. 🙂 If that isn't working it could have something to do with the Mac OS 9 drivers not being installed on the Hard Drive. Open Disk Utility and locate this:  Hope this helps. 😉 | |

I think that's why I'm going to have to reinstall everything before I can update the firmware. Or, as all seems to be working fine, I could just leave it with the old firmware. Cheers 🙂 Hugh | |
