my first freebie of the year - and a good one!
Went with my father-in-law to a tip in Essendon, dumped our crap - checked out a skip with keyboards plastic waste etc in it - first keyboard I lifted up, looking up at me was a shiny iPod 3G 40GB!
Got it home, thinking the usual errors it could have - dead HD, poor battery - but it span right up on my G4 Cube, complete with good music and I really can't fault it. The battery seems to hold charge too!
Rather delighted with this find, as my iPod 4G 40GB has been flaking out for some time - I often have to drop it from a distance to get the HD to spin up ...

As for your 4G, have you tried reseating the hard drive? I seem to recall reading some posts on MacTalk about 4G iPods having issues with hard drives, and people fixing them by reseating the hard drive...then again, if you have to drop it to get it working, it could also be stiction.
