| Virtual PC 2.1.2 update? |
Posted by: Anonymous Freak on 2010-01-31 17:40:20 Hrm. I now have a copy of Virtual PC 2.1 (thanks to atireduser!)
But...
I really want to run it on my B&W G3, in Mac OS 8.6. Unfortunately, there is a known incompatibility which requires the (free) 2.1.2 update for it to run in 8.6.
Well, Connectix is now long gone; and Microsoft doesn't offer up any old Connectix-era updates. Anyone have this updater lying around on some forgotten corner of a disk?
(P.S. I'm posting this from the G3, in 8.6, via Classilla. Thanks, ClassicHasClass!)
One fun factoid from the ReadMe that I hadn't known before: Virtual PC 2 supports direct hardware access of 3Dfx cards! It wasn't until 10 years later that VMware got the ability to directly access a 3D accelerator.

Posted by: macgeek417 on 2010-01-31 19:58:37 OK, I found 2.1.3, would that work? It can update from 2.0-2.1.2 to 2.1.3.

Posted by: macgeek417 on 2010-01-31 20:47:25 No problem!
I just had some time to kill while waiting for these stupid ~250MiB XviD anime episodes to download... Stupid slow connection!

Posted by: ClassicHasClass on 2010-01-31 22:11:15 You could still get very good performance with VPC3 -- I keep it around to play older Windows games. Believe it or not, on my MDD G4 this is enough to run Shogo MAD in Windows 98 with software rendering at a frame rate that isn't atrocious. (I don't need it as much now thanks to my wonderful OrangePC 620 and the 400MHz K6-III I put on it, and I have the Mac native Shogo anyway, but at the time it was great stuff.)
VPC4 ruined that and the rest of the releases sucked for games.

Posted by: quinterro on 2010-02-04 10:58:12 I used to run it with a Voodoo2 card. It was pretty nice for games that supported that card.
May have to resurrect my Beige G3/400 to see what kind of damage I can do. 🙂
