I still say Suse Linux PPC is the way to go. Many things JUST WORK right of the box with that Distro.

Ubuntu is good as well. Arch Linux, and then if you want to customize EVERYTHING Gentoo Linux PPC.

With Gentoo you will learn a LOT about your mac's internals and with compiling in general. The cost is the time to learn it all though 🙂

You forgot to say what your primary use will be.

for now just dip me toe into the linux ocean and see what midi/audio programmes it has to offer

i was not aware until lately that a QS G4 ( 933 ) could handle linux

You can put linux on about anything 🙂 Some toasters, some fridges, my old 386-16.

My oldest mac with linux was a Performa 6300 I think. Been a long time since I booted that machine up.. It has an older version of YDL on it though.

The QS 933 should handle linux no problem at all. Suse Linux PPC just always installs very well for me. I know others have their favorite distros, but once Suse brought back PPC support that was great!

At work I even have a IBM AS/400 machine with Quad 603E 233 cpus running Suse PPC - It was one of the few distros I could install via serial port console. No active graphics display on that box either so it runs pretty well since it doesn't have to deal with X windows or a gui at all locally.

Good Luck

Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch...

I could have sworn I read somewhere that openSUSE was dropping PPC support.

Ubuntu is community-maintained now, but it's very formidable (I recommend the Alternate Installation ISO regardless of architecture...better experience post-installation). I haven't tried Arch on PPC yet, but I may. Debian has never failed me on PPC.

Issues to condsider? No Adobe Flash if you use that often on the web. Java is there, but not the official Sun JRE. There's a free software version called IcedTea that uses Sun's OpenJDK.

Yeah, Suse dropped official support for awhile, then they brought it back a couple years ago, and now it appears they have just dropped it again.

I've been installing version 9 and early 10.0 Not sure what the final ppc release was now... Something else I need to look for now.

Good luck!

I've downloaded/burned openSUSE 11.2 i1586.iso

and now it's time to build my courage to see what happens running it

I use ubuntu 6.10 on my powermac G4 and it runs fine, the only thing is its hard to find software for ppc distros linux

The ISO that you downloaded is for Intel processors. It won't work on PPC systems.

As quinterro said, you won't be able to start any PowerPC Mac up off that disc, thats for an Intel PC system. You want a version of Linux thats built for use on a PowerPC, which will have "ppc" in the filename rather than "i586" or "i386".

Since it appears you have a dvd drive here is a link to Suse for the last supported build.. I've not installed this particular build, but looks like I need to try it out since it's the last on this platform..

http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/iso/openSUSE-11.1-DVD-ppc.iso

Note if you browse up from there on the site you can get to the older versions as well. Just look for the ppc variants and you will be fine.

Good luck

You might also have a look at Yellow Dog Linux (YDL). Here you find a list of supported hardware. It worked very well for me on a Titanium PB. The installation was almost painless, just had to address an issue with the graphics driver software. In case you start to fiddle with such installation, probably with dual or triple boot bootloaders etc., do most carefully read and follow the instructions. However, back up your harddisk before installing stuff like this. There are chances to mess up your system completely.
