| Weird ADB Keyboard question |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2009-12-16 18:42:43 I have a model M0115 keyboard (Apple Extended Keyboard) that will make a computer turn on simply by plugging it in. If I attempt to shut down the computer, it'll automatically start back up as if I'm holding down the power key.
However, while the computer is operating it functions normally. It's just this one keyboard, but I don't have any others like it to compare.
Is this normal for this type of keyboard? Or is it faulty?

Posted by: LCGuy on 2009-12-17 05:07:21 Yeah, I'd say there's a short in it somewhere. When you turn on a Mac via the keyboard, it shorts one of the pins on the ADB port to ground. I'd say that for whatever reason, something's gone wrong with it thats causing that pin to be shorted to ground at all times.

Posted by: olePigeon on 2009-12-17 08:17:01 OK, thanks. There were a few more like this one at the store, but they were in less-than-ideal cosmetic condition. They are only a $1, so I'll just go pick one up and swap the innards. 🙂

Posted by: Bunsen on 2009-12-17 10:43:35 What do you mean by the "innards"? It may not be the controller board that's shorting, or the keymatrix. It could be the ADB connector, or the cable, or even the power keyswitch itself?
Or do you mean swap everything and just use the plastics from the nice looking one?

Or do you mean swap everything and just use the plastics from the nice looking one? Bingo. :beige:

Posted by: olePigeon on 2009-12-19 15:15:41 I fixed it! 😀
They didn't have any more M0115 keyboards there. I figured I'd put my soldering iron to good work and I managed to fix it! I'm completely surprised. I had a 50/50 chance of guessing which ADB port was shorting, so I just desoldered one of them. Plugged the keyboard back in and it no longer automatically started. Yay! Picked the broken one. I then cannibalized one of my other keyboards for its ADB port. Soldered that one in and now it's working! Doesn't auto start.
Yaha!
