| 6500 Motherboard in a Performa 575? |

Will the 6500 motherboard slide right into a 575? It should, yes, but it won't work. The 6500 requires 3.3 volts, but the Performa case and power supply doesn't provide that. If you wanted to do something like that, you could make a 3.3 volt regulator and attach it to the 6500 motherboard like so:

My motherboard isn't a 6500, but it's close. My guess is that it's from some sort of 6360. I found the motherboard in the trash in NYC many years ago and transplanted it into a Quadra 630 case.

Will the 6500 motherboard slide right into a 575? Oops. Nope. I was getting my machines confused. The Performa 630 / Quadra 630 type of motherboard connector is similar enough for a 6360 / 6400 / 6500 motherboard, but the Performa 575 is not even close. It is close to the Color Classic, though.

Posted by: MacClassic10 on 2009-12-15 17:30:58 Well I'm trying to find a motherboard higher then the 575 motherboard that will fit into a Performa 575 without any modification.
I'm going to be putting the 575 motherboard in the color classic. 😛

Posted by: MacClassic10 on 2009-12-15 17:38:38 Is there any all-in-one Macs that a 6500 motherboard will plug into?
Also will a 580 motherboard plug into a 575?

Also will a 580 motherboard plug into a 575? The only all-in-one Mac that the 6500's motherboard would fit in easiest is the 5xxx series AFAIK.
and I've heard that because of the CS I slot in the 580's motherboard, it won't fit in a 575 or a Color Classic.

and I've heard that because of the CS I slot in the 580's motherboard, it won't fit in a 575 or a Color Classic. The 575 has a CS I slot. The orientation of the motherboard connector on the 580 is reversed from the 575's.

Is there any all-in-one Macs that a 6500 motherboard will plug into? the 5xxx series AFAIK. Without mods, only the 5400 and 5500 from memory.

Posted by: LCGuy on 2009-12-16 05:58:08 Bunsen is correct - in order to use the 6500 board in a 5200 or 5300 chassis, you must do the 3.3v regulator hack mentioned by johnklos.
|
Posted by: Gil on 2009-12-16 06:13:45 There is an exception. The hack *MUST* be done for the 5400 board. However, the 5500 board will work *WITHOUT* the hack, but there might be issues with PCI. I'm not sure if this is true for the 6200 or 6300, but I was able to pop a 5500 board into a 6200 and use a USB PCI card. I haven't read if the 6x00 machines needed this hack, but it worked without it.
The hack is a must for the 5400 board, though.

6500 board in a 5200 or 5300 chassis / 3.3v regulator hack I was able to pop a 5500 board into a 6200 Huh. I actually thought you couldn't use an x400/x500 logic in an x2xx/x3xx chassis at all. I stand corrected.
The only time I tried it I got 240V mains coming out the SCSI port, which kinda put me off :scrambled:

Posted by: MacClassic10 on 2009-12-16 09:26:54 Interesting discussion thanks for all the info. My main goal though is to find a motherboard other than the 575 board that I can put into the 575 chasis. Because the 575 motherboard is going in the Color Classic. I asked about the 6500 motherboard, because I can purchase it online for cheap.

Unless you replace the internal wiring harness with that of a 580, you're only going to be able to swap Color Classic and 520/550/575 boards. Like I said before, the logic board connector is reversed, starting with the 580.
