636CD, 7.5.3, Asanté brick? (mb better in Quadra sec?)
Posted by: usotsuki on 2015-05-10 17:20:56 I have no idea what I'm doing, and only minimal familiarity with the Mac, so please bear with me. I have a Performa 636CD (same as LC 630, or Quadra 630 with nerfed CPU), and someone sent me an Asanté "Desktop EN-SC" brick to get connected to my router. Cable I'm using I used previously without issue on an IBM 5160 hooked up in the same location. As I don't know if any specific issue is a manifestation of my problem, I won't make any assumptions, but I'm not able to establish a connection to my router, let alone run any Internet software right now.

I have the driver. There is no place on my model to plug in an AC adapter. There is nothing but the SCSI port, the RJ45 jack and a BNC plug (for an alternate Ethernet connector). (I did say it was the "Desktop EN-SC" model; apparently the other models in the product line do have AC adapters.) The power LED remains on while the Mac is operational, and the "LI" (link?) light blinks at a fixed rate. Occasionally I've gotten TX and RX to blink as well. The port does not show up on the router and no IP is being found but I think the brick is.

You can connect via http (netscape), ftp (fetch), or to another apple file server on another connected mac. You might also need to configure your network settings in the TCP/IP control panel. If you're still lost - ask a friend or associate (who knows how to configure a network) to configure the computer for you. LI means that the link between the asante and the router or switch is established. This is good. It's probably a configuration problem. I have the driver. Posted by: usotsuki on 2015-05-15 23:38:52 I couldn't get Netscape to install on 7.5.3 and I think my IE installer was corrupted, so I'll need to look for another copy / older version. I do have an IRC client and an SSH client. SSH is quite useful to me, actually.
