| Quick question, can you put a Single G4 on Dual G4 board? |
Posted by: mac-man6 on 2009-11-14 09:17:16 There's a store nearby and I think I can get a single 1.25 ghz daughter card from a MDD fairly cheap. I have a Dual 1.00 ghz MDD with a burnt out processor. I've googled and found articles going from a Single to Dualie but not the other way around. Anyone have an idea?

Posted by: mac-man6 on 2009-11-21 20:52:18 I don't know, that was the way it came. What I think happened was the heat sink pulled away from the processor, so the processor with no cooling burnt itself out. The replacement I bought has a fresh coat of Arctic Silver.

Posted by: Rodus on 2009-11-22 10:26:32 Didn't there used to be a G4 daughterboard of some sort that could run 2 unbalanced G4 CPU's, i.e a 350 mhz and a 450 mhz. Always imagined that could be useful if you could find a cheap supply of CPU's.

Posted by: Bunsen on 2009-11-23 05:32:12 Yes there was - it was briefly marketed as an upgrade for the Beige G3 (not slot compatible with AGP graphics G4s). I think it was pulled for power and/or reliability issues. You can still find a review of it on xlr8yourmac.com

Posted by: macintoshme on 2009-12-15 22:24:24 I looked a little for that upgrade. I couldn't find it. Anyone want to point me toward it. I have heard rumor of it for a while. I remember doing a bit more research on it a long time ago, but could use a refresh.

Here's the review, and here's the manufacturer's page (archive)
Note that they claimed that only their own "modified" G4 ZIFs would work properly.
I see XLR8 also recommended that part as a dual G4 upgrade for PCI Macs, using their MAChCarrier (archive)
Mmm. A 9600 with twin G4s would be nice }🙂
These days? Rare as hen's teeth. I've seen ~one~ on ebay since they were announced.
nb: XLR8 and xlr8yourmac.com are not related
