Crazy day for yard-sale conquests
Posted by: geeko on 2009-11-07 07:02:45
i went out to yard-sales this morning with out any expectations of great finds, but MAN did i SCORE!! 8-o

imac g5, 2.0ghz, 1gb ram, original box, brand new keyboard and mouse- $20

Airport extreme base station (ufo)- $5

ibook g3 clamshell, teal, with power-cord- $15

All of these were from DIFFERENT sales– it seems like national sell your old mac weekend!

i have not tested out the base station yet, but the ibook works but is pre OSX (tiger or panther will be on it soon, as well as an airport card and more ram). the imac however is DEAD xx( . when i plug it in, an led (1st led in a row of four) comes on, but otherwise it is non-responsive. it does not seem to have bad caps, so i have no clue what is wrong with it. i tried to remove the pram battery and boot, but it was still the same, so i put the battery back in. the man i bought it from told me that he had problems with it before it stopped working, so i presumed it had bad caps. any help would be appreciated! i can't wait to get this thing working (but will if i have to πŸ™ )

That's an utterly amazing haul for so little - you'll look back on this day fondly for many years to come! I reckon there is a law now that says you'll sadly find nothing else for a very long time (but keep looking in the chance of reliving this day!).

Have fun with the Macs.

Sounds like your iMac G5 has the same problem mine has. Don't bother taking it to the apple store, they will just say your logic board is bad, and try to get you to shell out ~$500 for a new one. They said they tested it with another "good known" PSU, but I doubt it.

I took apart the PSU in mine, and I have one swollen cap, and 3 more leaky. Luckily I have friends who know this stuff.

i am going to take it to the apple store next friday, just in case they actually know what they are talking about. if they quote me way to high of a price to fix it, or tell me that it's something i know its not, i am going to try what you said, and if i screw up i'll buy a new psu of of ebay.

How wrong can you go with deals like that. The iMac is worth that even dead.

What kind of specs does the iBook have?

Posted by: geeko on 2009-11-08 12:03:31
the ibook WAS 300mhz, 96mb of ram, 3gb hardrive, os9.0

now it IS 300mhz, 288mb of ram, 3gb harddrive, Airport, os 10.3.9, and my mom's first mac (so far, so good! no more trouble w/visa }πŸ™‚ )

Very nice. I am a little surprised that 10.3.9 fit with some extra space on a 3GB HD. I find anything with OS X needs at a minimum a 10GB to be fully functional.

i installed it w/o any languages, Asian fonts, printer drivers, etc. and it still has a 1gb+ left

just to clarify anything that might be unclear, the iMac was $20, not $200 (i did not forget a 0) and

(so far, so good! no more trouble w/visa }πŸ™‚ )
i meant Vista, not visa
