Free iMac G5
Posted by: 4seasonphoto on 2009-10-18 14:43:17
Scored a working iMac G5 from my employer, but need to recap the power supply and motherboard before I dare to use it much. Got several others which aren't powering up at all, but don't know if recapping + new fuse would fix or not. All have bulging/leaking electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard or power supply (usually both). I hope to restore, add AP+BT+Tiger+Classic for some vintage gaming.

Hehehehehe welcome to the club of free iMac G5's! When I got mine it had no leaky caps just some ram problems and it was like a gift! It replaced my iMac G3 350!

I count 25 motherboard capacitors to replace, and then I get to work on the power supply!

ALL of them are bad? On mine only the orange Rubycons (Fake ones) are dead.

In that lot of iMac's you got do you happen to have a good PS? I would buy one from you.

All 4 have bulging/burst capacitors in the power supply, even the one that still powers up OK.

This person suggests changing out all of the failure-prone parts, not just the one or two that are obviously shot:
