Test LC Power Supply?
Posted by: Grampa on 2009-10-15 10:26:11
Warning-Warning-Warning Forum newbie question!

How do I test an LC power supply outside of the computer? I've searched this forum, and didn't find a definitive answer, but I suspect I sorta did.

My understanding is that the black leads are ground, yellow +12 volt, orange +5 volt, and blue(?) -5 volt. I also read that the power supply was "smart" in that if it detected a load when switched on, would then provide power. Did I get that all correct?

So,

I wired nutted the yellow, orange and black (no connection for the blue) to a harness connector on a hard drive (for the load), confirmed the voltage needed for each pin and switched on the power supply. Just a slight clicking sound from the power supply. If I got all of the above correct, I believe the hard drive should have spun up. If so, then the power supply is toast?

Thanks!

Hi Grampa. 🙂

My LC's power supply has the same symptoms you've mentioned, the clicking sound. It's most likely toast.
