Posted by: bluekatt on 2009-08-27 19:14:42 picked up a 2001 quicksilver recently with a new psu
512 mb of ram 60 gig hd and a sad sad ati rage 128 16 mb video card for 50 euro
733 mhz
i upgrade the ram to 1 gig when i got it home
and other then the sad excuse for a video card which i want to replace its running just fine if a bit sluggish under tiger ( no plans to upgrade to leopard i dont like the looks of leopard and only have it on my intel imac for bootcamp)
i do wonder if its possible to upgrade the QS to dual 800 or dual 1 ghz with cpu's from the 2002 line or are they pin and fsb incompatible ?
i took a look at the sonnet upgrades and those are hellishley expensive
i like the QS but for that kind of money im better of buying an MDD that needs little upgrading what so ever
stil all in al its a good machine even if it hates me

Posted by: Mars478 on 2009-08-28 05:03:47 Nice find! In my School's fleet we have a SawTooth with a 1Ghz Sonnet upgrade.
Not sure if that gives you any info, but whatever.

Posted by: bluekatt on 2009-08-28 05:21:41 id love to get my hands on that sonnet upgrade
and the QS dislikes me because it sees my geforce 3 ti 200 ( i plugged in to cover up the unsightly hole in the back ) it sees it as a nvidia card but wont actually do anything with nor can i find any drivers

Posted by: Christopher on 2009-08-28 10:32:51 Is this a PC NIVIDA card?
|
Posted by: bluekatt on 2009-08-28 11:49:50 its a pc nvidia card
an geforce3 ti 200 agp 4X
some forums say that its bios is mac compatible because it has a dvi port ( i doubt that )
i mostly keep it in the agp slot to cover up the unsightly hole in the back cover and because the mac will boot with it
it refuses to boot with the agp 8X cards
im also eying to flash this one instead fo the others i dont have to modify it in anyway or shape
and 64 mb is plenty for an old QS anyway what games am i going to do run on it other then the sims 2 dungeon siege and older mac os 9 ?
its not as if i plan to use leopard assist and install leoaard ...though im tempted just to see what it will do

. . . and a sad sad ati rage 128 16 mb video card . . . Make all the fun at that card as you want, I went waaaaay out of my way to get a better one, but then I couldn't find drivers for it! Apple has sole rights to them and apparently they're not coughing them up . . . the pikers! So that sucker never put out more than 640 x 480!
I put the Rage 128 back in and started fiddling around in the monitors control panel to find something that looked good letterboxed on my 22" 1080p monitor. I was VERY surprised to see any 1080p setting at all, but at 75 Hz it wouldn't sync with my HP LCD.
But guess what! After I flipped on the unrecommended resolutions . . . THERE IT WAS! I'm now using that sad ati rage 128 to drive the LCD at its native resolution at 60 HZ/ millions!
jt: muahahahahahhahaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: bluekatt on 2009-08-28 11:59:12 i am not making fun of it ...much
its better then the 8 mb ati mobility in my ibook G3 500
its just frustrating that i have 4 better video cards that i cant use at the moment
im glad it stil works and my lcd was dying not the card other wise my QS woudl be useless
but tiger is already struggeling with it let alone leopard

I'm now using that sad ati rage 128 to drive the LCD at its native resolution at 60 HZ/ millions! I'm putting up with a Rage 128 Pro in a DP500 while I procrastinate in finding a replacement. You must not use yours for very much, because every time I encounter any flash at all online it chokes. I tried beating it with a riding crop to no avail.

Posted by: LCGuy on 2009-08-28 21:10:31 I remember when the Rage 128 came out....for its time it was a very powerful card.

You must not use yours for very much, because every time I encounter any flash at all online it chokes. My 1Ghz Digital Audio with 256MB GF6200 chokes with flash.. not that either of those are all that powerful.. still... |
Posted by: Temetka on 2009-08-29 03:49:53 My sawtooth has a 450MHz G4 and a 16MB Rage128 card.
Back in the day I bought a brand new 16MB AGP Rage128 card for my Pentium II Tower and it totally kicked ass. The Rage128 GPU is a powerful GPU. Just dated.
It kicks ass in OS 9 and even in OS X it handles all of my video needs just fine at 1280x1024 on a 19" LCD. Flash sucks, but flash sucks on nearly any PPC short of dual 1GHz G4's or a G5 machine.
Don't sell it short, it's a decent card.

That's because flash isn't hardware accelerated. It's all CPU. Nevermind what flash says when you right click on a flash file and select the options or something.

I haven't got ANY access to the web at home! 😀
I do all my browsing/posting/email at three coffeeshops on HP_Mini . . . now running ubuntu! YIPPEE!!!! [😀] ]'>
All I've used the ole' DA/Rage128 for so far is playing around in GraphicConverter to cull/edit/tweak personal and hacks project piccies, which is pretty nice working on a 1080p LCD . . .
. . . I've also been making some widescreen DeskTop piccies while I'm at it. }🙂
ubuntu is so awesome that I'm doing some research into hacking an X-86 ATX board of some kind into a really cool Digital Equipment Box that's the right color scheme & similar styling to my Radius clone!
That'll be my GimpBox, no internet duty for it at all, just hard core graphics . . . I have no desire at all to find out just how much slower HP_Mini is . . .
. . . as compared to a REAL Computer! :🙂

bah any computer with a gui is a toy Guess that's better... heh.
I have the same system, a QuickSilver 2001 but with a 32mb GeForce2 MX card installed. I'm pretty sure the CPU's across the G4 range were the same (with the exception of the very first Yikes G4's), so they should work, however the bus speed changed between then. QuickSilver's have a 133MHz bus while i'm pretty sure MDD's have 167MHz FSB's, so an MDD CPU in a QuickSilver will run slower than it would in an MDD.
EDIT: Actually according to Sonnet's site the MDD processors differ from previous generations. I'm not sure what the overall difference is though.

Posted by: bluekatt on 2009-08-31 05:37:06 well right now id rather have a better video card thena better cpu ( though a dual 800 mhz Qs would be nice)
tiger is already struggeling with just the screen saver with this card
so off i go to look for a junker pc
all it needs to do is boot of a floppy
post and reconigse a screen keyboard and 2 video cards
|
Posted by: bluekatt on 2009-08-31 16:11:40 the Qs is now running with a geforce 3 ti 200
massive improvement
i see leopard in its future ..kinda maybe
