| Pippin @World controller ^^ |
Posted by: protocol7 on 2009-08-16 07:19:15 A friend has picked up one of these for me. We're just trying to track down an ADB adapter so I can hook it up to my Mac before he sends it out to me. I've only been able to find one on eBay so far and the guy must be on crack if he think's it gonna sell for that price.

Should be fun to play around with. It would be kickass if I could use the trackball to control the ship in Descent 🙂

the guy must be on crack if he think's it gonna sell for that price. Considering the rarity, it's not that cracktastic. It's not like he's asking $250 for an 8 bit Nubus video card.

Posted by: protocol7 on 2009-08-16 08:48:45 That's true perhaps. I just can't see how it's worth that much. I don't think they're all that rare, but maybe I'll change that outlook if it takes too long to find one.

I don't think they're all that rare It's for a Pippin. How many of them do you think exist?
/ETA/ On the other hand, wikipedia says:
Bandai manufactured fewer than 100,000 Pippins (reported sales were 42,000) before discontinuing the system; production was so limited that there were more keyboard and modem accessories produced than actual systems. which is quite a few more than I thought, and bodes well for finding accessories.
Whether it's worth the asking price though is entirely up to you.

Posted by: protocol7 on 2009-08-16 19:15:17 Yeah I'm hopeful enough of finding an adapter cheap enough. Pippins are actually not that hard to come by, though they tend to be pretty overpriced on eBay. If you check out Yahoo Japan Auctions you can almost always find at least one complete system on offer. One went the other week for just under 8000Y, which puts 56 bucks for a cable and a floppy disk into context.
The only real problem with them is they're pretty much only good for internet bragging rights. The software catalogue is dreadful (and a lot of the titles can run fine on regular PowerMacs). So my interest extends purely to the AppleJack controller 🙂
