| Unconquest: Closet space! |
Posted by: sambapati87 on 2009-07-16 22:03:06 I've found its way easier to give old macs away on Freecycle than to find them!
I've dispatched 3 mostly broken G3 iMacs and a G3 Minitower to happy collectors/tinkerers in the last 2 hours. I kept my best G3 for an OS 9 gaming machine when I can scrounge up a monitor, but the iMacs were taking up too much space and I had no time to get them working. Of course, I would never throw them away, and its worthless trying to ship them anywhere.
This will give me more room to work on my HappyPlusClock duty Mac Plus. I have plans for case restoration, adjusting the CRT geometry, and adding an internal fan, hopefully to run 24/7 or damn near close to it.

Posted by: Mike Richardson on 2009-07-16 22:35:12 I set 4 broken iMacs on the curb last night, as well as an IBM typewriter, some dead stereo equipment and a broken Apple StyleWriter, all from the (overcrowded) warehouse. I could probably write off at least 5 more iMacs if I could get around to testing them. I keep the motherboards and stuff out of them.
This weekend I'm giving away free Power Mac 5xxx machines at the semi-annual HAAUG swap meet. However, keyboards and mice will cost extra.

Posted by: Mike Richardson on 2009-07-17 14:54:17 Here's what I get for leaving iMacs on the curb.

The assholes threw the iMac against the ground, ripped off the copper yoke and degauss coil, and left the rubbish parts on the street. They obviously knew what to look for.
This was a working booting iMac with a motherboard and everything, but it had a really poor case and was unsellable.

Not much more than can be done with that old Mac, i'm afraid. Hopefully they got a nice whiff of all the nice toxins inside that CRT.

Posted by: John8520 on 2009-07-18 06:42:49 Well... I mean... if you're gonna leave stuff out on the curb (i.e. trash) what do you expect is gonna happen? If you really "cared" about it you wouldn't have trashed it, imo. ๐

Posted by: Osgeld on 2009-07-18 10:37:30 I dont think its a matter of caring or not, its a matter of now there is broken toxic glass n plastic smashed all over the front drive, non assholes would have just taken off with it
also this was probably the work of some form of junkie looking to score a couple bucks, which is a great feeling to have

Well... I mean... if you're gonna leave stuff out on the curb (i.e. trash) what do you expect is gonna happen? If you really "cared" about it you wouldn't have trashed it, imo. ๐ I expect it to be removed and I never see it again, just as if I had put it in the dumpster, except maybe someone can make use of it when I can't or don't have the time to.
If I take those gutted iMacs to the city recycling center, they just get shipped off to India or China anyway where they're going to burn the motherboard to obtain 50ยข worth of gold and burn the PVC off the wires for more copper and then dump the left over shit in the river. Who knows where they really go if I take them to Goodwill.
The environment is probably better off with me putting the iMacs into the dumpster than giving them to the places that send it off to China.

My warehouse is too full of stuff right now. I'm planning on having a big sale, perhaps starting next week, but I need to prioritize nice, working iMacs over ones with terrible cases that I can't sell.

China would be an Apple collectors dream. Free keyboards and shiz.
Inb4 environmentalists, think of the children, etc. I know already.
