Duo 280c!
Posted by: System7 on 2009-06-22 06:16:28
Well I finaly got the Duo 280c to boot! It has a full 40mb of ram! Sadly, the lower mouse button fell off. Spindler Plastic.....

It has 7.5.3 on it, and a Duo Minidock. 350mb HD. But there was one very very odd thing about this duo. Almost all the folders had 256k Color Porn in them. And the person subscribed to porn services on the old internet...... It was all the duo was used for. > 🙁 A 3700$ Laptop, just for that?????? I think this must had been some very rich lonely person, but if he was so rich, he SHOULD had been able to solve that with the 3700$ sum in cash.

Now I must zero out the hard disk, and sanitize it so I wont get any diseases from the thing..... Anyone know where I can get a replacement bottom mouse button?

EDIT AFTER TYPING......

I am even more disturbed of the contents of this duo after snooping. "Electrical Projects", and a whole lot of other stuff I dont want to know.

FORMAT!!! FORMAT!!!! xx(

Did you ever clean this thing?

Posted by: System7 on 2009-06-22 08:04:01
It got a bath in disinfectant before I used it further. Installing 7.6.1 on it now.

Haha probably whacked the mouse button too hard. And honestly, you probably could have sold that hard drive. ;D

Electrical stimulation of the genitalia can produce an orgasm....or so I have heard.

Umm...

I'd wipe the HD a few times just to be sure. I know once will do it, but the heebie jeebies will still be there so the other wipes are just for the sake of mental sanity.

I like the 280c -- I remember for the longest time my dad used it working at Apple as his main computer.

Ah, probably nothing on that computer than a gynecologist hasn't seen countless times before.

Speaking of which, I wonder how gynecologists get their kicks. Playing scrabble, maybe.

Just a reminder from your friendly moderation team - please remember to keep posts family friendly. 😉 (this is not aimed at anyone, I just thought I should remind everyone of that before someone makes a post that most people wouldn't want their children to see)

To add to the family-friendliness comment, we want to keep in mind both children and employers.

(Also keep in mind professions/fields other than your own when you read the "employers" comment -- something appropriate or even standard fare in your office might get somebody else fired.)

um yea, i would probably disassemble it and boil the whole lot in bleach water

Posted by: Byrd on 2009-06-26 16:27:00
What? Not only would that melt and distort the keyboard parts, but it would also discolour the plastic beyond recognition!

Posted by: Osgeld on 2009-06-26 16:52:01
not that i am suggesting that anyone actually do that, as it was a joke

BUT with a low enough bleach to water ratio and no contact with heat sources ( burner pot ect) it could be possible

Congratulations on this "score", Duos seem to be fairly hard to come by, especially working (!) complete systems with the Dock as well, and were one of the greatest realized concepts for business and the workplace ever, especially considering when they came out. I wanted one immediately and it would have served my needs perfectly, unfortunately neither the company I worked for nor I could afford them at the time. 🙁

The best thing you can do for any machine you inherit under any circumstances is to just start over. Run disk utilities/maintenance to seek and correct HD media problems, then reinstall an OS from scratch and do a (Norton's "Wipe Info" back in those days, among others) deep cleaning of all the unused disk space. Besides getting rid of unwanted cooties, you'll end up with as snappy 😀 a Mac as possible. The old software is still out there and available if you don't have it. A couple days ago I just cracked the seal on the envelope of an After Dark 2.0 800K floppy disk contained in an unopened shrink-wrapped original box I picked up cheap on eBay a couple years ago, - works perfectly. Making a disk image and other duplication was the very next step. Sent it to another member here on the forum for his Color Classic.

all the best!

Possible, yes.

Sane? Maybe.

I'd do it with 100% pure distilled water, then dry it in a humidity free environment with forced air to ensure that ZERO moisture remains on the board, or under any chips.

Bleach is poison, which is one of the reasons a ton of countries have banned it's use along with chlorine. If you have it, toss it and get something less likely to kill you with a few milligrams.

As for the 280c itself, a thorough HD wipe and compressed air blowout should clean it's insides nicely. I recommend a light water / lemon solution 95% H2O, 5% lemon from a lemon and the casing will shine like new. Also, no chemicals involved. This makes gaia happy.
