So I'm back home from uni, and have therefore been playing around with my old Macs for the last few days. After the Freecycle haul I got back in April, I now have two LC IIs - one I got from the freecycle haul, and one I got back in 2000. Both have dead mobos.
Freecycle LC II: This machine's board is completely dead. I have never seen it work. I apply power, the fan runs, the HDD spins up (when installed), but thats it. No boot chime, nothing displays on the screen. I've tried a couple of power supplies, PRAM batteries and VRAM SIMMs with it, all of which are known-good. Nothing seems to get the machine to show any signs of life.
old LC II: This machine has been mostly trouble-free up until January this year when the ADB started playing up. It would require you to reboot it several times to get the ADB to work. Once you got it running however, it seemed to be alright. Now, when you power it up it displays a grey screen, which flickers as the speaker crackles. As with the Freecycle LC II, I've tried different PSUs, PRAM batteries and VRAM SIMMs, all of which work fine with the LC475 board that I'm currently running in this machine.
I'm assuming it could be the caps, they're not leaking, but it seems that the caps on all the machines of this vintage are starting to go out anyway, so yeah. Sometime over the next couple of days I'm going to wash both boards, and we'll go from there. Anyone else have any ideas as to what could be up? Thanks in advance. 🙂

You need the capacitors replaced, should be fine afterwards.
