Crippled Keyboard
Posted by: MrMacPlus on 2009-06-01 17:36:43 Actually, this conquest is a few days old, but seeing as there was a bandwidth overflow... I got a filthy Apple Extended Keyboard II, though written on it was " 'A' Key is broken". Regardless, I snagged it, it was free, so I saw no reason not to take it. I cleaned it up, plugged it in, and found that the "a" key, was, in fact, broken. Looks like I'm going to have to fix it, because I love it. 🙂

Posted by: beachycove on 2009-06-02 19:23:13 Pry off the key and spray some electronics Contact Cleaner down the hole of the Alps switch. The general sort of thing you will find can be seen here. Contact Cleaner should be your first port of call in my view; it has worked for me, on Alps switches that worked intermittently or only with force, or indeed not at all. Failing that, Google and ye shall find somewhere or other how to fix one of the switches by more drastic measures. I have collected several of these recently and they are really excellent keyboards that are well worth fixing. The switches do, however, have a tendency to need a little TLC after all these years.

Posted by: Dennis Nedry on 2009-06-03 06:29:22 I've also had success with spraying a tiny little bit of WD-40 into the key and pressing it lots of times. It is probably a piece of dust or debris stuck way down in the key that keeps it from making contact.
