Pismo keeps asking me to shut down
Posted by: aladds on 2015-04-12 06:56:34
I know this isn't a mechanical problem, as I've gone so far as to unplug the power button to see what I can do here.

I know the power button works, because it can boot the thing from cold.

But every 5-10 seconds, the "Do you want to shut down" box pops up, as if I've just hit the power button.

The only thing I can think of is to swap the DC/DC and/or power/audio boards and see if that fixes it, but if someone has another idea then I'd be willing to try that first! (Plus getting parts for these is becoming harder)

(Frankly, a software fix which removes the dialog would do, it's not like I use the thing very often...)

Thanks!

Have you tried booting from a system cd , see if it does the same ?

I booted from a 9.1 CD and it wasn't doing it, so I did a fresh install... and it's ok now.

Genuinely confused as to what caused it (~15 years playing with Macs and I've never seen this before!), but it seems ok now so I'm happy. Thanks!

Yes , strange. Maybe a virus, there was some :

Can get them with old downloaded games sometimes. Install Desinfectant.

Happy to know it's working now.

I would guess it was a power management issue with the software.  Like shutdown every 15 minutes.  It only asked you because you were using it.

I assumed it was a power management issue as it won't charge batteries anymore (hasn't for years) but that could of course just be dead batteries! (One of them was a new NuPower MaxCapacity in 2005, which I seem to remember lasted about 5 years, but its final act was to run down and not charge up, which is what made me suspicious)

Edit: This particular Pismo also has broken USB, but that's another thread!

I love my two NuPower batteries - they are both getting weaker, alas. I keep babying them along.
