Posted by: coius on 2009-05-04 11:29:37 QuickSilver G4 Board
A much needed replacement. the other one was acting up.
And because I was stupid:
933MHz G4 CPU (OC'd from 733Mhz)
I tried to push my G4 up too far and cracked the CPU D'oh!!! That wasn't smart. Oh well, it was cheap enough. I just happen to bid on the CPU and get it (with mine the only bid!)

Is your QS DP capable?

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2009-05-05 00:26:12 I like the G4 towers and will probably end up getting one someday, but what is wrong with their PS units? Seems like so many otherwise nice G4 towers end up getting parted because the now rare PS bites the dust. Somebody should have a run of cheap copies made in China and shipped here. This is common to all the ADC equipped G4's isn't it?

I haven't heard of cases of that in recent years so Maybe all the bad ones are gone?
Plus, can't you just fine a regular power supply with the same power rating and do a bit of retro fitting to get it going?
I've had this dualie G4 for a good 3 years, it was used endlessly before me so I think that solves the case with this one. I also have a quicksilver that came from Mike and it's still working just fine.

Usually because they are powered off of the PSU that is already weak. Mine has NEVER had an ADC Monitor hooked up to it. Thank you! The PSU is in excellent condition. I took it apart and no sign of any problems.
Also, yes, my System is DP Capable. That applies to all machines I believe since the Gigabit Ethernet G4s. The Sawtooth was a maybe, depending on the config. I have a GE G4 Dual 500Mhz in the SawTooth I have (that is sitting dormant)

Posted by: Christopher on 2009-05-05 09:00:48 I love G4's but the only thing that bugs me is the fan noise and heat that comes from them. Otherwise, if you have the space, they won't disappoint you.

Posted by: Hotdog Zanzibar on 2009-05-05 20:47:07 My dual 800 QS is still running fine, but I have a QS 867 with a dead PS. It ran for years and then just died one day. Power supplies for these things on ebay often cost more than the computer is worth ...

Posted by: coius on 2009-05-07 12:20:26 got the parts, but I doubt I will get them put in till tomorrow as I will be watching my friend's dad closely since he just got out of the hospital. I hope he is gonna be already!
Anyways, they both came today (despite ordering them 5 days apart from the other), so one was a really quick shipper, and the other a really slow/lazy shipper.

Posted by: MultiFinder on 2009-05-07 16:00:20 My dual 500 G4 tower ran fine for years until the PSU blew out randomly one day more than a year ago; prod the power button, it lights up, sparks and smoke come out the rear fan vent, light goes out. Poor bugger was out of it for around two months before I found a new PSU for it; in the meantime, my 6500/225 took its place as my main desktop 🙂

Your sig quote is all kinds of awesome and funny.
A computer without Microsoft is like a chocolate cake without mustard. As my hero and personal mentor Mr. Burns would say:
Excellent.

Posted by: coius on 2009-05-09 14:00:01 I got the parts installed 😀
The CPU and board work PERFECTLY. and it looks like it boots from CDs now. I just booted the sucker from a TechTool Pro DVD, and that means it passes the test.
If anyone wants a worn-out G4 QuickSilver 2001 board that they want to play with, it's free + Shipping.
I am wondering why the old board would work fine if booted from PCI SATA, but not from an optical drive :?:

Jumper settings?
My gigabit has major issues with that, I used to be able to just put everything on cable select, but now I have to specify each hard drive/optical drive the jumpers. It's probably a logic board issue seeing as how firewire target disk mode causes it to shut down.

I tested it right before I installed the new board and CPU. Nothing worked as far as booting. Popped in the new board and it immediately booted from CD drive.
It also goes into FWTDM perfectly, and the option boot selector works right.
I iz happy 😀

Posted by: Temetka on 2009-05-10 01:23:15 I'm glad you got your QS up and running again.
Maybe you could purchase something like this and turn your dead mobo into a functional time keeping device. I've always thought it'd be cool to do to a motherboard.

I iz happy 😀 Thats cool, my gigabit gets messed up when you try the bootloader to boot from a linux disk.
