I've noticed something new in posts lately: images.
How do you do this, i.e., embed an image (.jpg or the like) in a post here?

Yes, we don't currently have inline attachments enabled, so you'll have to use an external hosting service. Any of the image hosting sites (ImageShack, Photobucket TinyPic, etc) will work if you don't have web space of your own.

Any word on a way to limit the picture size within a post? Or must we resize ourselves any photo we link to in order to fit ergonomically within a post?

I personally recommend that you resize an image yourself or use a site such as Flickr which gives you the image at a few standard denominations smaller than what you give it. I believe one of them typically ends up at 320 or 360px wide.
We may or may not currently have something rigged up to limit the display width of an image to 400px, but that doesn't mean when you load a post with images, you aren't loading a picture that's a thousand or more pixels wide, just as a warning.

As Cory said, there is currently a Javascript thingie that resizes the display width of inline images to 400px as long as your browser supports it and you're using the default theme. However, your browser still needs to load the whole image before this can work, so if you go posting a whole pile of 2MiB JPEGs in a post it's going to take a while to load and generally piss people off. Unfortunately there's no better way to resize offsite images without slowing down the forum a lot, so if you can post smaller images then please do. As Cory mentioned, most of the photo hosting sites offer thumbnail support, so use that if you can or resize them yourself.
The inline attachment ability has the provision for making thumbnails automagically – however the last thing I want is for all my server's disk space to be used up by people posting hundreds of large JPEGs of their cat/dog/mother/etc, so it's currently disabled.
