Peripherals don't work: iMac G3 OS 8.6
Posted by: XBHS1997 on 2014-09-15 14:08:34
Hi!

I'm trying to get an iMac G3 Rev.D 333 Mhz Tray Loading working. Somebody has installed a later OS 9 for iMac DV slot loading and messed up the OS. Well, my actual problem: I'd like to copy the System Folder of another working, identical iMac, but USB sticks won't work. It recognizes them, but then shows a message (the OS is in French, I've translated it)

"The software resources needed for the use of the peripheral "[]" could not be found. Please read the peripheral's documentation to install them."

I've tried several USB sticks, from 64 MB to 4 GB. Does OS 8.6 work with Mac OS X Extended? And FAT16?

Sorry for the quite basic question, I don't remember which file types I've used on OS 8...

Did every single peripheral on OS 8 need it's own driver to be somehow installed before use??

Thanks!

Nicolas

OS 8.5 & 9 can read USB drives, but it needs the USB Mass Storage driver installed prior to using them.

Thank you very much!

OK, I'll try that and post again this week-end (I hope).

Thanks!

At this point it would be easier to remove the hard drive put it on the cd spot on the identical imac and mirror the drive and then put it back. It's only like 10 screws.

Or get a good OS cd

Hi!

So... is it really possible to just put the other drive in the working mac, instead of the CD-drive ?!

And then, mirror it with disk utility?

Then it's already done??

That would be great! Seems too easy!

No problem for the 10 screws, I've already disassembled some G3s.

Thank you very much!

Hi!

Now as the 4400/200 is finally working, I'm again back to the G3...

I still have a question: is it really possible to replace the CD-drive with another hard-drive, without any issues??

Thanks!

Yes just put hard drives on cable select as not to confuse the bus.

So "cable select" only on the one that goes where the CD-drive usually is, or both? :–/

But doesn't the CD-ROM drive have a 50 pin connector? I don't think you can use an IDE hard drive unless you clip 10 pins off the 50 pin connector. You will also need to find a power source for the IDE Hard drive.

Here, it's a PATA drive (see last pictures): https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+G3+Model+M4984+Optical+Drive+Replacement/1502

So, according to you (SuperToaster), should it work? :–/

Thanks!

Oh sorry! I didn't realize this was a tray loading system! I thought we were talking about a slot loading (probably was tricked by your profile picture

No problem! It's another one of my 11 iMac G3s! ^^ I didn't even know that they had different internal connectors??

Well, I'll have to try it, I will have to make something to hold the second IDE HD in place.

Thanks!
