Mini-15 Display Port...?
Posted by: thinkdifferent on 2009-02-15 21:55:12
I currently own a well working PowerBook 180, built in 1991 and running System 7.1. I was looking to connect an external display to it, but I didn't recognize the display port on the back on the PowerBook. After doing a little research, I discovered that the port is called a Mini-15. Unffortunately, I have had no luck in finding a Mini-15 to VGA or Mini-15 to DVI or Mini-15 to S-Video adapter anywhere online. Does anyone have any idea where I could find an adapter? VGA would be preferred, but any commonly used display port will do. Thanks in advance! :b&w:

Apple's part number for the Mini-15/DB-15 (not VGA) adapter is 590-0831-A. They turn up on eBay from time to time. To that you can attach a standard or a switchable DB-15/VGA adapter.

You could also try direct approach to the likes of macmetex and olde-mac-milt. I know of no Mini-15/VGA, but I certainly wouldn't dismiss the possibility.

They are all over ebay. You should be able to find one local without any difficulty. No-one calls them Mini-15 to my knowledge - you want a Powerbook Video Adapter, looking like the one that equill posted. Despite the description in that listing, they adapt to Mac DB-15 video, not VGA - you can run an older Apple monitor off them directly, or any VGA monitor through a Mac-VGA adapter.

I got an adapter from welovemacs, I never got a chance to test it as when it finally got here, My PowerBook 180c's hard drive died. Well, lets just say things get pretty messy if you don't have a torx screwdriver handy... I mangled a screw well and tore the SCSI ribbon. One day I may decide to blow some cash on it... One day...

Thanks for all the help. I have an old (14"?) Apple Monitor that should work with my PowerBook.

I have found one on ebay for $25. Thanks again! http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-590-0831-A-Macintosh-PowerBook-video-cable_W0QQitemZ150295033275QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting
