$200 and not even over yet, what gives?

Posted by: beachycove on 2009-02-08 12:36:27 The rising prices are sometimes the product of inflated & unrealistic expectation, but on the other hand, if the worth of something is what someone is prepared to pay for it, it could be that $200+ for a 9600 is a side-effect of Apple's rise to a higher share of the market in recent years.
In other words, the switchers might just be getting nostalgic - in which case, some of us would be rich if we could flog all our gear to new Apple users. For $200, I'd sell one of my 8600s. In fact, I'd let all three of them go for a knock-down price: $599.95. Get yer bargains here!

I'd sell my 8600 for $75.

Posted by: Bunsen on 2009-02-09 13:28:09 They're still the only Macs with 6 PCI slots. Stick a G4 upgrade in there and they're still quite capable machines, especially if you have a PCI Avid or ProTools setup that needs a host.

$200 and not even over yet, what gives? I was watching that one too. Ended at $260.50 when all was said and done. Thats about what it would cost for a Quicksilver G4.

260$ may be worth for to pay a 9700 prototype but not for a normal 9600. Well, it wasn't exactly a "normal" 9600. It had the 350MHz Mach V in it, so its a little more rare than your average 200MHz beige Mac. I do agree that $260 is much more than its worth.

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2009-02-10 10:18:20 The only difference between a 350 and a 250 is a CPU and a case sticker. The people who still use avids would not touch a PCI 9600 setup, probably the same with protools users because newer setups are cheap and seem to do much more. This sold to a collector I would think, what they plan on doing with it I have no clue.

Posted by: howismydriving on 2009-02-15 19:44:36 My friend won it. He needed it for an old Avid system that the local school system still had. He was surprised it went for so much, but it saved the school system 4000 dollars to find a spare.

I have no clue. [😱)] ]'> I meant newer AVID setups, and they don't need alot of PCI cards... and the second quote, well just wait untill I find one of your posts and take it out on context 😉

Posted by: Bunsen on 2009-02-15 22:07:04 Yeah, but have you seen the price of new Avid and Digidesign professional gear, and the machines to host them? Makes $200-odd look pretty reasonable

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2009-02-15 23:15:51 Sure if you have all the AVID cards, media drives, software, cables, breakout boxes, and the elusive dongles. Odd to have all that and not the 9500 or 9600 they were installed in.

He just needed a spare for the system. Also, Avid is pretty choosy when it comes to Processor upgrade cards. Having the 350 604e is a good thing. 🙂
