My Quadra 840av
Posted by: netfreak on 2009-01-29 22:20:35
So I booted up my Quadra 840av for the first time since I got it years ago. Big time mac collector shipped it to me along with a bunch of WGS 6150's and other parts back at my old house. Most of that stuff was lost due to my roommate screwing me over with the moving truck. Anyway, it had a 7.5.3 boot CD in the drive which I found out was because the HD seems to be dead. I was then shocked to find that it has 128mb RAM.

So... thought about doing OS 8 on it but I think A/UX 3.1 is in its future. Last time I ran that was on my IIci which is also long gone.

No version of A/UX will run on the 840AV, sadly. 🙁

I'll try anyway. I've butchered a few 040 systems in the past getting A/UX to boot properly. My main issue was 68LC040s that I upgraded to 68040s giving a black screen during the A/UX boot. Others I could resolve with system enablers. So if I don't see it crap out during the installer boot, there may be hope 🙂

a) It won't work.

B) Why would you want to run an OS on an 840av that is unable to do the things specific to the 660av and 840av Macs, anyway? MacOS alone will run the two processors properly. Marvelous machines.

I'll never have a use for the features on that machine. I only do audio work and I've got a G3 tower with a Korg pro audio card.

I'm still going to try A/UX. I spent a larger chunk of my youth ripping apart Mac hardware and software, and have some creative ways of making things work. If it does end up a failure, maybe I'll mess with OS 8 or something.

Ah bugger, ROM does not appear to be removable from what I've been reading. Not willing to take a soldering iron to the board... OS 8 it is then I guess.
