Super Mario Bros. for the IIgs
Posted by: Dog Cow on 2009-01-20 14:45:46
Oh yes, it is true! Have you ever played Super Mario Bros. on the NES? If so, then you're in for a treat, because now you can play it on your Apple IIgs as well.

It is a pretty good emulation of the NES game. Game physics and sound differ, and only the first few levels are playable, but it's still quite impressive. I believe it is one of the only full-screen scrollers for the Apple II or GS.

Note: this really needs to be played on a real IIgs for best performance. I've tested it on a ROM 01 and ROM 3 machine. It will fit on an 800KB disk and you need about 200KB of free RAM.

I managed to transfer ALL THE files to my Apple IIgs but when I double click it on System 6.0.1 it doesn't work, it says it cannot find the Application to execute it and when i try it from prodos it says " Mismatch" or something that. I tried running it as:

BLOAD not work

BRUN not work

LOAD not work

RUN not work

Double clicking the icon on System 6.0.1 not working.

No, you use Command key for jumping, option for run (and fireballs if you have it), and the numeric keypad for going left, right and down.

How did you transfer the files? You should have the ShrinkIt .shk file sent to your IIgs, then use the GSHK program to un-shrink it. Otherwise, if you try to send the files "out in the open", the file types will get messed-up.

That is exactly what happened, the file types getting all screwed up. But I resolved it. :I

He's gone on to trying to turn the SMB stuff into a toolset for the GS that people can use to write their own games.

I don't recall him saying those exact words! What I do remember him saying was that you could press the i key to get interlace mode, and I tried that but it did not work.

I clicked your link there but I did not find anything in the website mentioning a Super Mario Editor for the Apple II gs!

Posted by: Dog Cow on 2009-01-23 09:47:19
Yes. It's quite a common sight in the old Apple/Mac world. Moof! Rainbow dogcow comes from one of the color Stylewriter page setup dialog boxes.
