Visioneer PaperPort - connection issues

I picked up a Visioneer PaperPort at a local electronics shop - just the scanner, no power supply and no software.

I'm currently using a Canon power supply (20v 2.2a) to power it - it makes a startup buzz/humm when connected to power, which I am given to understand is expected.

I've hooked it up to my SE/30, but I'm not having much success.

I got the PaperPort control panel from the Visioneer site (version 3.5.3), and the PaperPort (version 3.0) software suite from another online source. 

Every time I start up the connection from the control panel, I get a connection error.

Any ideas?

A correction: I actually have installed PaperPort 3.5 software; PaperPort control panel is 3.5.3 from the Visioneer website.
