PC, Playstation

Today I got most of a PC except the CD-ROM drive, memory and a processor. ATX case, power supply, socket 370 motherboard, 6.4GB hard disk and floppy drive.

I was also given a Playstation 1 console with a couple of games. Now all I need is a power cord, a controller and a memory card.

I still have my PS1. That thing was a piece of shit. Half the games I had were so buggy and had so many glitches.

Can you not tell the difference between hardware and software?

Crash Team Racing, original Gran Turismo, HP + Chamber of Secrets, HP + Philosopher's Stone; all good. Not a bad piece of kit for it's age.

The games these days are no less glitchy than games made back in the day. Check reviews and you will find plenty of crap games. Good examples are the $20 wii games.

As a developer myself, I take my hat off to the games writers who have to produce a disk that cannot change, no updates, no fixes or patches.

I remember when we had our first playstation, loads of fun. Which type have you got, the big old boxy one or the newer "PSOne" slim type?

Square, not curvy. Not that it makes much difference I'm sure, unless you want to add the small LCD screens.

I LOVED my PS1 when it first came out. Coming from Sega and Nintendo gear I was blown away by the 3D graphics. Of course it does not compare to todays stuff but what does?

It's the older model. The only game from the batch that I can remember is Metal Gear: Solid Snake.

I used to have a Playstation years ago and I can remember my fair share of dud games.

I've still got my Playstation (SCPH-9002) and all my 16 games don't appear to be glitchy or badly programmed. Yet 16 is a very small fraction of Playstation games that were released so I'm sure that some of all the games released were fairly poor quality.

I have one line to say in response to the PS1.

Sega Saturn.

Sure it may had had less games....but the hardware was impressive!

These days you are better off with a PS2 - it plays PS1 games just fine and you've also got all the PS2 games to choose from. PS1 is still nice for a collection though.

Sony cut the external ports from the Playstations with model changes and cut the opening mechanics with the PSOne(the small).

There were special white blue and black units for video CDs and developers.

The PSX is still good for playing music CDs with the 2x CDROM drive.

It lacks computer functionality and RAM,me had 2 defective incomplete units and couldn't build a MIPS computer from them, because of missing skills too.

On my working

unit I soldered a different colored power LED in.

If you have a mod chip, you could use homebrew games developed with a gcc

MIPS R3000A cross compiler and special libraries.

Put a CD into your PlayStation 1's and while its playing at the CD window press Select.

The original PS/1 is supposed to be really good-sounding as an audio CD player, and in fact, it got a writeup in Stereophile magazine earlier this year.

I found my PS2 to play my PS1 games slightly slower than my actual PS1 which is why I kept my PS1.

Finally got around to bringing it inside the house.

The games were:

Metal Gear: Solid (PS1)

Animorphs: Shattered Reality (PS1)

Singstar Rocks! (PS2)
