Bunch of PC stuff (again)
Posted by: joshc on 2008-12-06 07:24:27
I know, its not Mac stuff (pretty hard to find where I live, annoyingly). This time:

Pentium 4 CPU on a micro ATX board

Celeron CPU on a micro ATX board

ATI 64MB graphics card

Paid £10 for those (with two cases, one is a cube-type case, the other is a mid-tower, quite nice).

Intel 486 tower (huge and VERY heavy)...not tested yet.

Pentium-S 120MHz tower (works, boots into Windows 98, seems to freeze a lot...98 was always a POS!)

Serial mouse, PS/2 mouse, and two Serial keyboards (one of these is an Apricot keyboard, w00t 😛 ).

Got all the old stuff for free.

Once again...the question is...what do I do with 'em? If the 486 works, I guess Windows 3.11 will be suitable -- also a good opportunity to play with DESQview.

Good deal for all of it. Personally I'd piece it together and sell them as complete working units. Either the 486 or P120 would be good if you like the older MSDOS games but there is not much sense in keeping both. Maybe make an email server out of one?

Monowall works on pretty old machines. The P4 is pretty useful for anything really.

*digs thread up*

Just got two free TIME computers. Some of the UK members might remember TIME (they still exist now, but they did go bankrupt in 2005). Anyway, one is a Pentium II (a Slot 1 cartridge processor, like the one in Apple's old snail ad.) And the other is a Pentium III. I tried putting Xubuntu on the P3, but it was *incredibly* slow. I think Windows 2000 will do nicely for the moment.

I love getting free machines, even if they are not Macs. 😛

Never heard of 'em, when I first saw the name I thought they were surplus machines from the magazine. 😉
