1.4 GHz AMD system with lots of goodies
Posted by: joshc on 2008-11-24 13:36:21
I collected a 1.4 GHz AMD Duron beige tower system today for free!

I know, not a Mac...but whatever. 😉 The fun thing is that its got removable/hot swappable drive bays.

But that's not all...I also got a Sharp 15" LCD monitor, some RAM, a wireless card, a laptop wireless card, a modem card, a lot of mounting screws, and some thermal paste.

The machine came with 4 hard drives (2x40GB, 1x80GB and 1x160GB).

I think this is my best free conquest so far (apart from the NeXTstation I got for free from a good friend). [😀] ]'>

I installed XP on it this morning, and it runs faster than I expected. Now the question is what to use it for...

I prefer my 1.6GHz AMD Athlon 2000XP myself.

Anyone gotten OS X on one of these cpu's?

OS X won't run on these, they don't have SSE2.

The Athlon is a much better processor - the Duron is equivalent to Intel's Celeron processor.

Unless you use a patched kernel, like Voodoo XNU - it allows you to run OS X on non-SSE2 machines. But even so, the motherboard in this machine is incompatible and would cause a lot of problems with OS X.
