b&w g3 will not start
Posted by: sircabulon on 2008-10-13 12:24:44
I just got a blue and white g3 to replace my beige. I want to put my sonnet accelerator into the b&w, but whenever I clock the bus down, it will not boot. I would just keep the beige as my main machine, but the video is wayyyy to slow and the b&w doubles almost all of the video benchmarks even with the processor being just over 1/3 the speed. I popped in the os 9 machine and tried updating the firmware with no luck. What should I try next?

Firstly, does the B&W boot with its original CPU? If so then you can narrow the problem down to Sonnet. Is the sonnet upgrade compatible with the B&W? Check their website.

Here's a good guide to different jumper settings on the B&W

If you have the Rev 1 motherboard that could also be a problem, those things were flaky in pretty much every way.

Another note: If the CPU upgrade is a G4, you need to update the firmware to allow G4 upgrades. Sonnet should have an update utility on their web site. At least they did when I upgraded mine to a G4/400.
