| Performa 6400/180 |
Posted by: Rodus on 2008-08-30 04:22:53 For £5. It has the L2 cache, PCI ethernet and a 2MB PCI graphics card of some sort. I love the look of the 6400/6500 series, much curvier then most other old macs.

Posted by: WorkgroupServer on 2008-08-30 10:29:43 I like the 6400, but I think it has the most terrible video card of all macs built in standard. Your lucky you have the PCI one.
I've owned five 6400s over the years, and I'm now down to one:
300mhz g3, 168mb ram, 10gb hard drive.

Posted by: LCGuy on 2008-08-31 00:19:34 Indeed - the 6400 was the very last Mac to use the ol' Valkyrie, which debuted with the LC630 back in 1994. It was crap back even in the days of the 630 - the fact that they were still using it on the 6400 just goes to show how much trouble Apple was in back then.

Posted by: Temetka on 2008-08-31 00:48:51 I got another 6500 a few weeks ago.
A 350MHz model IIRC.
Not too shabby maxed out on RAM, a faster HD and a Rage128 for Video.
I quite like it actually.

Posted by: JRL on 2008-08-31 09:04:58 Congrats! I really love my Power Macintosh 5500/250.

Posted by: Rodus on 2008-08-31 09:56:34 I really need a G3 upgrade for it, already have a spare 128 GL to go in.

Some of the 6400 and 6500, suffered from bad internal modems.

I really need a G3 upgrade for it, already have a spare 128 GL to go in. I'm trying to recall WHO came out with the G3 cards for the 6400..
(did they have one for the 6500 ? )
Sonnet, Newer, and maybe (?) microMac...
maybe none of the above...This might be an ebay item..

Posted by: WorkgroupServer on 2008-08-31 16:48:11 My 6400 has a Sonnet processor upgrade. I haven't heard of any for the 6400 from Newer or microMac.

maybe none of the above...This might be an ebay item.. The very first company to offer G3 upgrades for the 6400 was VImage. They were also the first company to offer G3 upgrades for the 4400/7220 and Tanzania clones. Shortly after that, Sonnet, Newertech and (i think) XLR8 followed.

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2008-08-31 19:24:02 I have a 6500 225mhz ( I think) board stuffed into my 6400 case. Still kind of slow.

Posted by: Temetka on 2008-08-31 21:12:59 My 6500 has a 300MHz G3 from Sonnett in it. Makes the machine pretty snappy compared to the gimpy 603e CPU.

Posted by: Rodus on 2008-09-01 05:03:12 The 6400 was never considered a road apple, just the 62xx-63xx
So, has anyone here got a G3 upgrade they'd consider selling me

Posted by: Bunsen on 2008-09-01 11:01:24 If you can spare one of your two PCI slots, apparently the Sonnet 7200 G3 works - and they're knocking them out for $19 for 400Mhz these days.
I say apparently, because ISTR someone here tested it. A bit of searching might turn it up.
The L2 cache slot G3s do turn up on ebay with some regularity, and they tend not to be too expensive
