Quadra 610 very slow internet
Posted by: micler on 2008-08-19 08:44:19
Hi there, I'm new and I think these forums are great! I didn't know there were so many old Mac users out there 🙂

I have a Quadra 610 running OS 8.0, and connected to the internet by an AAUI to 10BaseT ethernet dongle. Using Netscape 4 (or other browsers), I am able to connect, but the speed is horrible. Netscape displays the download speed in the status bar and the most I have seen it is 4.8K/sec. I have DSL, and newer computers have good speed. Any ideas?

In case it matters, a Power Mac 6100 with the same AAUI ethernet dongle works just fine, and is plenty fast (or at least what you might expect).

Thanks in advance!

This is the expected behavior, sadly. It seems to be a problem with every web browser running on a 68k Mac.

Do you get the same horribly-slow speeds when using another networking application, such as an FTP client? I suspect that you won't...

Yeah, most of today's web is a bit much for the older Macs....especially 68K Macs. They can still browse just fine, but anything requiring CSS/Javascript will bring it to a crawl. But for standard HTML, it should be OK....not fast, but still decent.

Thanks, both of you are right: FTP is the same speed (or nearly so) of any newer computer, and with JS and CSS turned off, web browsing really improves. Good to know.
