S.M.A.R.T. Error
Posted by: leosadvs on 2008-08-02 20:02:42
hi!.. i just changed the ide cable of my g4 mac and now in the Disk Utility im get my drive in red

and a message that say i need to back up and change the disk... but the disc is almost new and its still working great.. anyone now what can be? a defective cable? or my disc is just dead? :?:

My first guess would be the cable since you didn't get the error before changing it. Remember, when things start going wrong, always check the free/cheap solutions before spending a lot of money you may not need to. You should also go back and reverse any recent changes made to see if that helps.

A bad cable would doubtfully cause a S.M.A.R.T. error. It's much more likely that it's just the drive; just because it's new doesn't mean it's not bad, or about to die. If you're not sure try another utility that shows more in depth reports of what's going on with the drive, it may just be Disk Utility messing up or a minuscule problem.

In any case, back everything up and prepare for the worst.
