Two Successes and One Failure

So I picked up a Performa 6400/200, Apple CRT, and a box full of software and a MIDI keyboard today, all free from some guy out in the east suburbs. The hard drive is bad but everything else is awesome.

While I was in the area I figured I would hit the local thrift stores. Salvation Army had nothing (as I predicted) but I found one called "Family Thrift Centers" or some such. It reminds me of Value Village in that they marked prices with the same red crayon type thing and seemed to be buying whole trucks of stuff from Purple Heart and whatnot. I get in and the first thing I see is the Apple Performa Plus display, the correct one I've been looking for a long time now. And 2 Design keyboards, I pick up all of it and take it to the front.

She refused to sell me the monitor because there was no price on it. The price smudged off or something. I even pleaded with her and she refused to do it. She says they have to take it in the back and price it and it would be put out tomorrow. That store is like 25 miles away, probably a gallon and a half of gas round trip from my apartment. I was so pissed off but I didn't say anything and I bought the keyboards and left. I'm going to go back tomorrow afternoon and try and buy the monitor. That's the failed conquest, but maybe it will turn around tomorrow. If it's working, it (as well as a laborious motherboard recapping) finally restores my Performa 400 back to it's original condition from 1994.

The other success, was in the "Alamo Thrift Center". They had a Personal LaserWriter, and what appears to be a sad little Performa 630CD with absolutely NO case plastic remaining on it at all. It looks completely naked, you can only see metal. Other than that though it seems to be entirely intact. Unfortunately it will probably be stripped due to the nude condition - it's not really sellable or anything but it can give some good parts.

What kind of MIDI keyboard? I want to get one of those one of these days.

My housemate just picked up a really nice CME MIDI controller for $175. It's a four and a half octave semi-weighted keyboard with a bunch of slide faders and knobs on it, a joystick and mod wheel.

myself, I carry a red grease pencil..to ' re price ' it, IF it's missing

it's price...saves the hassles...(but don't get caught, LOL! )

I went back yesterday - no Performa Plus Display. Either it was sold or the bastards still hadn't put it back out. Waste of 2 gallons of gas 🙁
