Trenton School Conquest Part II
Posted by: iamdigitalman on 2008-06-04 20:31:50
I will be heading back to Trenton tomorrow to pick up the rest of the macs from school. I talked to the guy in charge, he said he has more macs, most have processor upgrades. He also has a Powerbook 165, and a "mac camera", which could either be a connectix quickcam, or a Apple Quicktake. I hope it is the latter, but I found some documentation for a quickcam in a box from my last haul.

He said about 2/3 of them are working.

Wish me luck.

Good! let us know what you get. I might be willing to buy some off of you if you get anything that I would be interested in!

Same here! Tell me what you are looking for some of the haul and I will gladly check if I have what you want.

yeah, I have a feeling I going to be spending the summer sorting it all out. I just got my digital camera fixed, so I will be documenting it all, I just need a place to host it all. I was thinking applefritter of course, or flickr, but I decided on the retromaccast social networking site.

Between this and moving out of my parents house, a lot will be sold off.

Part of my school is being relocated and they have a lot of Perfoma 5200/120 s. I may take only one though because of space.

ew, no stay away from the 5200s. WORST MACS EVER!! This school has a number of them too, and as much as I hate to see them go to a landfill, they are not worthy. There is one 5260 which is a much better machine, I plan on grabbing that one.

Take one or two if you can. They're not so bad when you up the RAM and install a newer OS. The newer versions seem to alleviate some of the problems.

right I will then. Guess I will have to learn to love. I do remember the science teachers in high school running 5500s, those were some sweet machines. Nice and fast, and a TV tuner!!

He also said he might have some emacs after school is out, but since it is the end of the year, I will see what I can get. This B&W G3 is getting really long in the tooth to be used as a main machine...plus it's very loud.

off to Trenton in about 45 minutes then. Will post as soon as I get back. I am taking as much stuff as I can cram into my saturn, just like last time. Folding the rear seat down, putting stuff on the passengers seat and dash like last time.

Well guys, I am back. Total freakin score. Here are some of the things I got:

-A 3rd Apple IIgs, not a woz edition, hopefully a ROM 03. No cards, all backplates present.

-A Workgroup Server 8550 it's running appleshare server, and came with a monitor.

-A Quicktake 150 with a "low voltage power supply for information technology items only" adapter. Looks like the standard fare powerbook 1xx series adapter, but I won't chance it. Also came with a second lens in an apple logo pouch.

-An eMate 300 with dead battery, charger, and users manual

-A Powerbook 165 with a bunch of accessories and cables in a case

-2 old Apple II hard drives

-A 3rd 5.25" floppy drive and 3.5" drive for Apple II

-A ton of software for the Apple II in both disk flavors. Picks include Appleworks GS, GS/OS, Copy II Plus, Print shop, and Oregon Trail (double sided!!)

-Misc. Cables and accessories.

-4 Apple Remotes (need batteries and something to control), the old black kind.

-AppleDesign Keyboard new in box

-An Apple TV adapter kit in box for the pre G3 AIOs I assume.

About to go unload it all right now, but it was a fairly descent haul. He said another guy was coming to get the rest of the II software, so I had to pick through what he would give me. Most of the stuff he held on to was MECC stuff. I also got a bunch of Apple Hardware Test CD-ROMs, and restore discs for iMacs and eMacs. Several copies of iMovie II (YES!!), as well as a ton of copies of OS X 10.0. Some flat 10, some 10.0.3.

EDIT: I updated the post with clarification and new items. Still have half a load in the car, it's too damn humid out to go get the rest of it.

Sweet score.

The 8550WGS is a sweet machine.

Everything else is butter.

Congrats.

Oh, we demand pics or it didn't happen.

I am working on pics. I already got a pic of the emate and it's brother, my NMP 2000 side by side.

oh, and the WGS is a 132mhz model. I am debating on weather to leave the server software on it, or wipe it and use it as a system 7 machine.

Oh, more goodies: IN the bag with the 165 were a SCSI zip drive (in a neat little case with the cable. Wall wart does not fit), lots of software diskettes, a HDI 30 to DB 25 adapter, and the real cream of the whole thing: a obscure ADB flex light.

The thing is about 18 inches long, has a switch on the top, and the plastic cap comes off rather easily, making me suspicous the light is not LED. I wonder how I can replace it.

I plan on using this on one of the ADB jacks on my LCD for my B&W for some late night gaming sessions without relying on my desklamp or overhead.

Better than no Mac! It is the closest I'm going to get around here.

Posted by: iamdigitalman on 2008-06-05 21:09:27
yeah, I actually forgot to grab one of those. Last time I was there I ripped the hard drives out of all but one, and I got a box og logic boards and cards for them. There is still one under a cart. I think the 5260 got taken, since all that were left were 100mhz 5200s. I also forgot to grab the second LC 550.

Well, at least my car was not as full as last time.

right now I am playing with the emate. It would appear the battery pack is gone, because it will take and hold a charge for a bit, but as soon as I shut if off, when I turn it back on, the screen comes on for a second, then pops off. I was able to decipher though that the battery meter is still full.

Someone explain that one to me. I also have the manual for the Newtonworks Graphing Calculator module, but the NW package on the machine only has the word processor and the drawing module. I have the full suite on my 2000, so it looks like I will have to beam them over.

Alright, I had a chance to figure out how to take the WGS apart, so I did. Not the easiest machine in the world to disassembe. I found out it has an Apple branded 10/100 PCI card in it, just like the G3 AIO I got before. Never seen these cards before. The machine also has a tape drive in it, and I spotted a newertech logo, probably a G3 upgrade. This is kind of a kick in the pants, because I have yet to own a actual 604 machine, and would like to run Mac OS X on one. But, the G3 upgrade ought to make System 7.6.1 SUPER fast.

I'll buy your 165! Lemme know what you want for it!

Posted by: nextse7en on 2008-06-05 23:54:06
I'll pay dearly for some 5 1/2 copies of gs os and oregon trail!

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2008-06-06 00:04:35
Didn't GS/OS come on 3.5" only?

I should have a 604-120 from my 8500 if you want it for the 8550.

5200s and 5260s (hoichh-ptthh) and 5500s are very very different beasties. The motherboards in the former group are design disasters.

True - but I have heard that the PSU in the 5260 is interchangeable with the one in a 5400/5500.
