Can a Rev. A Bondi handle a DVD drive?
Posted by: Sosai X on 2008-05-26 22:04:07
So I am almost done pimping my iMac.. from the stock 233 G3 / 32mb RAM/ 4 Gb hard drive to a 466 Mhz G4 / 256 Mb RAM / 75 Gb hard drive. However, it still has the stock 24x cd-rom. I see many of the slot-loading 4x DVD-ROM drives that have been pulled from other iMacs on eBay. Can i swap my stock cd for the slot-load DVD?

If the connector on the back is the same (after you remove the iMac-specific interface board), then you shouldn't have any problems. However its been a few years since I've opened a slot load iMac, so I'm not sure about what they use.

However, your tray load iMac should have no issues handling a standard laptop DVD drive, even a working pull from most PC laptops. I've used a TEAC DW-224E (Combo) borrowed from a Toshiba Tecra S1 in my Rev. D tray loader before, and it worked perfectly.

The optical drive in a tray load iMac is a desktop drive. This is good, as it'll be a lot cheaper than a laptop one. However even with the 466MHz G4 I think it may struggle a bit playing DVD movies. Could be wrong.

Erm, since when? I've never seen a desktop optical drive in any iMac G3. They use standard laptop drives.

And yes, they will struggle playing DVD movies...in VLC, my iMac 333 can sort of play a DVD in a window, but not very well. And full screen? fahgeddaboutit.

He said he upgraded to a 466 Mhz G4, should be fine for DVDs.
