Posted by: iamdigitalman on 2008-05-22 18:36:42 Hey guys, I may be looking at one of these beasts. They did not say if it's a 500 or a 700, but either way, it's made of win. I made an offer, so let's see if they take it. If so, I will be driving out of my way to go get it, but I will have to borrow my mom's mariner, since I doubt my saturn station wagon could haul a mini fridge.
I will keep you all updated, this is very preliminary.
Oh, they also have some other unix boxes too, that they are getting rid of, SGI indy, sparcstation 10, etc. I might be interested in the sparc, but idk yet. We will see if they will even let me have the ANS.

Just one thing - don't get too excited...whenever I get excited about stuff it usually never happens 😛

Posted by: iamdigitalman on 2008-05-22 21:51:59 yeah I have had that happen before on many occasions. That's why this forum is littered with many of my failed possible conquest threads.
Hope the admins don't mind if we post about possible conquests, weather or not they happen.

Posted by: LCGuy on 2008-05-22 22:24:11 For as long as I can remember, thats -never- been against the rules. I know i've done it dozens of times.

Posted by: iamdigitalman on 2008-05-23 01:14:50 Oh yay, good news!! He responded!! He said my offer is not enough, but he wants to do a trade, so if I can get it for 2 or 3 of my macs, then that's great.
But the best part, he asked if I was a member of the 68kmla, so I think he may be on here. If you are, go ahead and post, my fellow Michigan brother!!
(OK, yeah, I am getting a little over enthused, but it's been a very slow week).

Posted by: Christopher on 2008-05-23 11:06:54 84 lbs.!?!?! Dude that's insane.
|
Posted by: MacMan on 2008-05-23 11:35:26 Well at least it can function both as a server and a coffee table.

Posted by: Christopher on 2008-05-23 11:46:00 That thing is going to be loud. Imagine how much dust it can collect. 🙂

Posted by: duewix on 2008-05-23 12:04:38 Hey - I kinda lurk here but I am an actual member. I'm the guy that has the AWS...it is a 500/132. I bought it from the Kiwanis Garage Sale in Ann Arbor a couple years back and supposedly it came from a local business. All the drives were pulled, sadly, but we jerry-rigged a 2 gig hot-swap SCSI drive and a CDROM into it. Never got around to getting AIX to run on it though...right now, it makes a nice table in my old workshop.
They aren't quite as beastly as you'd expect - like a couple of Quadra 950s glued together on a wheely base. I have moved worse - my SGI Onyx2 almost killed me. I was kinda disappointed by it - I expected more exotic hardware but it is essentially a retooled (some would say crippled) 9500 with a built-on RAID.
iamdigitalman has dibs on all my surplus mac gear including the AWS but if anyone wants to get started on unix, I can hook you up with some decent gear.

Posted by: Temetka on 2008-05-23 13:40:22 It's really cool that you are hooking of fellow MLA'ers duewix.
What other gear do yo have?

Well at least it can function both as a server and a coffee table. That post made me laugh so hard that I almost spilled my Sprite into my server on the floor...

Well at least it can function both as a server and a coffee table. Not to mention a portable space heater

What other gear do yo have? Here is the listing. I was interested in the sparcstations, until I realized how old they are. I am just gonna help myself to the ANS, since I have AIX for it already.
and deuwix, it would be great if you could post here a bit more. Just saying.

Posted by: Unknown_K on 2008-05-23 22:44:42 An Indy would be kind of cool, if you are local.
|
Posted by: Cory5412 on 2008-05-24 02:14:31 Indies, being about half the thickness and the same footprint of a Mac II, are pretty cheap to ship. An Octane would be bigger or more difficult though. (really nice system, worth it if you knew you wanted to have IRIX 6.4 or 6.5 around for whatever reason.)
Best of luck with the ANS iamdigitalman, twould be a cool machine to mess around with. I'd love ot play with one, especially if it had it's original software & docs.
