PowerBook 520 for $30!!! | Posted by: coius on 2008-05-12 20:33:58 thank-you to patnukem, I have scored a PowerBook 520 (my first 68k PowerBook since 1998) for $30 cash. I will be picking it up either tomorrow, or on wednesday. I FINALLY have a 68k PowerBook again. These things TOTALLY rock. Has power adapter, is working. Not sure about ram. I bet the battery is dead. I *may* be able to get it back up. Not sure...
Don't know about the card cage or RAM. but I will figure something out 😀
| Posted by: Maconthemove on 2008-05-12 20:40:56 Nice. Does it have the pc card adapter?
| Posted by: coius on 2008-05-12 20:46:01 no idea. I will report when I have the subject in custody. I shall question it under the spotlight to see what it has on it (get it, Liberation army/capture?) and what it knows. I will also report what software it has on it. I *DO* hope it has more than 4MB RAM, if not, I will head to ebay and pick up some more (8MB Module at minimum) then use RamDoubler. I also will probably stick 7.6.1 on it too
I will need to get an AAUI adapter to get it on the net. Oh goody! this will be EVER so much fun!
| Posted by: Patnukem on 2008-05-12 22:38:22 I am glad you got that one. it looked (from the pictures) to be in good condition.
| Posted by: MultiFinder on 2008-05-13 12:27:55 Blackbirds totally rule. I <3 my 540c. It's actually surprisingly usable on the 'net for a nearly 15-year-old laptop. That said, I wouldn't want to use it as my main internets machine for any more than about seven minutes 😛
But still, great conquest! I've always kinda half-heartedly wanted a B&W PowerBook; all mine are colour :-/
| Posted by: coius on 2008-05-14 21:52:26 Picture 1
Picture 2
it's got a 240MB HDD (232.2 after format) and 4MB RAM (pity about the RAM, when I get more money to put into it, I will get more...
Â
It's got a 16 grays grayscale screen. Passive-Matrix, but it's not "Too" bad. The battery, when I pulled it out, was corroded. I have since removed the battery and will either leave it out, or find something to do with it (rebuild?) I am heading to the net to find an AAUI adapter unless anyone near Omaha, NE has one they can give up for maybe $10 shipped? Or anyone that can do it for $10 shipped. I would LOVE to get this on the network 😀
Â
Anyways, I am going to try putting 7.6.1 on it, does anyone have any objections?
Â
The software is sparse, it's got Clarisworks 4.0 and IOMEGA tools ( 😛 ) and it came with a Zip 100 SCSI Drive with a HD-30 -> 25-pin D-Shell Block.
Â
Is there anyway I can hook two machines up through SCSI and share IP over it? That would save me some money 😛
Â
it's pretty good, and I am trying to find a name for it. I am going to hit the net and look up some interesting names. I am thinking greek or something.
Â
Oh, and the keyboard is absolutely AWESOME! I love it more than my Lombard one 😛
