Can a Quadra 650 33mhz 040 go into a PB 540c?

Any comments

Nope. The 540c's 68LC040 is an SMT version mounted on a special daughtercard. The 650's '040 is a PGA. Its impossible, sadly.

but you can get equipment worth a lot of $$$ and a full blown 40MHz 040 in smt package and solder that one in and clock the thing at 45MHz. 😉

In case you're interested, there were 603e upgrades for the 540c made it's just going to be incredibly hard to find one.

I will keep my eye out for both types of upgrades.

So you want to upgrade your Powerbooks LC040 to full 040 or maybe a PPC, yes? You won't see to many 540 mother/daughter boards advertised out there on the interwebs, but you do see a lot of broken Powerbooks for sale for next to nothing.

As a case in point: I had a 520c that needed a few parts so I looked on ebay and found an auction for two Powerbook 540's (one with smashed screen + missing HD, the other looked dropped, and only power supply) and i got them for about $45 - I think the auction price was like $15 and $30 was just for postage! Anyway when they arrived I found that the one with the smashed screen was a PowerBook 500PPC, they both had 32MB RAM modules and lots of other goodies [🙂] ]'> Out of the three 500 series 'Books I managed to get one in perfect condition (the PPC, obviously), and the other was nearly perfect [😉] ]'>

You mean 5300 right? I wouldn't really count the 5300 as a true PPC Powerbook as it was basically a carryover 5xx series model with a PPC upgrade installed just like the G3 Kanga was a 3400 with a G3 installed. I wouldn't buy either one except as a gap filler in my collection.

It was a PB500PPC - whether or not it was shipped from apple with a PPC board, or if it was upgraded later is unknown. But it definitely was a 500 series case, and the badge said PPC (I can't remember whether it said 500PPC or not)
