Strange System Preferences
Posted by: quinterro on 2008-05-05 19:45:06
A few days ago my Sawtooth's system preferences appeared to go a little wonky. Most of the items appear to have a generic icon with a small circle by each one with tiny graphic of the original icon. An image of the preferences window follows:

Any ideas on how to get them back to normal? I have already verified/repaired permissions.

Your having Deja Voo.

That is really strange..... make a new account and see what happens.

It looks fine as a new user. Weird...

EDIT:

Stranger still - I logged out of the new user account and back in as the main account. The icons are still on the desktop, but the dock has been reset.

Never mind. I erased the preferences. Oops. [:I] ]'>

Yeah, I'm pretty sure erasing some preference fixes the odd SysPref problem, too. I ran into it a couple years ago, and found the answer online; although my Google-fu is weak at the moment.

I cleared the preferences and ran disk verification/repair but the icons are still funky. I created another account and logged in as the new user. On that account they look OK.

Now I"m trying to figure out how to copy them from one account to the other, or just to get them working logged in as myself.

Put the files you need in the public folder of the new user and get them to your new account that way.

I think the problem is fixed.

After installing MAMP, I removed the standalone installation of MySQL. It has a preference pane also. Once that was removed all of the icons reappeared. Go figure.
