Sega Game Gear

Hi,

not very Mac related, but cool to me and hopefully others. The story goes that I was helping a wealthy friend of my parents clean out his massive house in preparation for rental. He gave me lots of household effects to use in my house.

I went into the house, and spied a mint Sega Game Gear ready to be put in the bin. I scrounged around, found a few games (Sonic 2, Columns, Shinobi II), asked him if I could have it. Sure he said - but it didn't work. It was quite a exciting score, as I used to own a Master System when young, and always lusted for a Game Gear - but they were always very expensive.

Got it home, found it worked OK but the screen was very dim; a common problem due to failing caps. I replaced all of these - 15 or so - and it fired up like new. Certainly the screen isn't overly impressive compared to current handheld consoles but would have been amazing in it's day.

I also got an unused game of Final Fantasy IIX for Playstation (four CDs!), fired it up and I know it's a good game, but really can't get into it, it's soooo slow 🙂

Since then, I've purchased a Master System Adapter off eBay that lets me plug my old Master System games into the Game Gear - bloody hell it weighs a fair bit now, but I'm pretty stoked 🙂

That's very cool. I remember when those were fairly new and they were indeed very expensive. At that time I also had a Master System but it died several years ago and got chucked out, (though I still have the games and accessories). I'm thinking of getting another Master or a Game Gear with the Master adaptor for ultimate portability. It would be great to play Sonic the Hedgehog and James Pond again!

Wow, congrats! I remember wanting a game gear so badly when they were new... 😛 They had the TV/FM adapter for those too, which was "epic" if I do say so myself.
