Apple Remotes
Posted by: aphetica on 2008-04-29 11:58:26
How many different kinds are available, (models, colors, etc... other than the newer white one) and how many of them are interchangeable with other models?

Like... will this remote:

...for a 6230CD...

control a 6400? I noticed that both of my 6400s have IR sensors, but neither came with remotes... what can they control other than the TV tuner? Can I change audio playback or play/pause/skip a CD track with it?

The older black Apple remotes are compatible with all of the 63x, 6xxx and 5xxx machines. In my experience, the remote can be used to change channels with a TV tuner, control speaker volume, toggle between Apple Video Player and Finder and control CDs (skip, pause etc). Of course, you can also use the remote to power on and shut down compatible Macs which is very cool!

There may be other functions which I have forgotten about, it has been a while since I've played around with my remote and 5400.

Cool, thanks!

Do you think it can control Soundjam MP track playback?

Sadly, you can only use it for Apple Video Player and AppleCD Audio Player. 🙁

For the record, most Sony TV, VCR and stereo system remote controls should also work on a vintage Mac.

Sony remotes work with Apple remote control IR on the Performas (I used my MD deck remote on mine when I have it in the 630). I assume therefore Apple's remotes work on Sony stereo hi-fi stuff too. Might be fun to try it.

Ayup, I can confirm that I've been using the remote off Dad's Sony HiFi for years, and I've also used an LG VCR remote that has been programmed to output Sony TV remote codes with my Performa, and it works fine.

Yep - I had an old sony tv and that remote turned on my 6300 back in the day...

So what your saying is that if I get a generic TV remote and program it for a Sony model TV I can use it turn on my 6400 and my 6200cd? If so I will try that out tomorrow.

You should be able to, provided it uses the "old" Sony remote codes...IIRC there's two types, both "old" and "new", and the Performas need the "old" ones.
