What are your Freecycle conquest rates?
Posted by: aphetica on 2008-04-14 18:43:10
So, based on the number of times you email people who are offering computers / parts on Freecycle- how many of them actually result in conquests?

I must have sent about 50 emails in the last 6 months and none have paid off.

Mostly because the item gets snagged in about 3 seconds flat.

However one guy told me I could pick up an iMac, but before I got it he emailed me and told me he would have to change the pickup date, and then I never heard from him again even though I emailed him about 3 more times after that over the course of 2 weeks.

Never - our Freecycle doesn't have computers.

I've never gotten a computer, but I recently scored a giant stockpile of bricks for the patio we're in the process of making.

Sometimes I wonder if there are people who have some kind of notification sent to their cellphones or something whenever a new message is posted... I mean... I would think I would've gotten lucky atleast once by now. :/

I've only given away, somebody scooped a broken athlon machine and bunch of parts that resembled a PB 170 almost instantly.

I have never seen a computer of our local freecycle

I signed up, recieved loads of emails, now it's on my spam list, more trouble than it's worth.

Computer parts are rare on freecycle, the ones I reply to I get maybe 40% of the time. I have had decent luck with requests (mostly because I look for obsolete stuff).

apparently my local freecycle mods are keeping all the computer posts to themselves as i've seen a couple takens without offers.. i did have some luck posting wanteds though a while back.. might have to do it again...

Well, I've gotten one 'score' off Freecycle out of only four computers I've seen, so I'm in the 'best' category. But mostly because there is so little stuff worth trying to get.

I mean, Portland is a hippie, techie city. You'd think there would be more computers on Freecycle here!

Hippies are thrifty though, I used to live with a bunch of them. 😀

It doesn't surprise me that they'd snatch up all the freebies.

Did you try setting it to daily digest instead of individual emails in the options section?

I only get 3 emails a day; one from my home county and one from each neighboring county. 🙂

If you do that, you miss all the goodies. With FC, you have to be watching it almost constantly.

The only time I've ever emailed about a Mac on Freecycle I got it - it was a Performa 630. There's rarely anything on our local Freecycle that I would be interested in.

I did great (until freecycle decided to boot me for saving macs from being put in to the landfill) now I avoid it its to much work to look though them all for that one mac. I may set up a new account and filter every email that says mac or apple to get forwarded to my email lol.

In the last month I've gotten a working Performa 575 by posting a "Wanted" on our local Freecycle. It's missing the back I/O plate, but it works great.

I also picked up a Quadra 605 with a cracked case, a 660AV with a broken locking tab and a Powermac 4400 off of the computer ads in Craigslist. The seller wanted $15 for the power mac and was just getting rid of the other two. I asked about the Quadra and he gave me all three.

Now if only I can find an SE/30...
