Free RAM!

So today I discovered that the uni is throwing out old Ipex P3/450s. Anyway, I asked if I could get some parts, and they threw me a 256MB PC133 DIMM 🙂 Which will go rather nicely into the BritPC (boosting it to 512MB)

Sadly some iMacs are going to the crusher 🙁 But sadly they have to be written off :'( I can understand why, but personally, I'd be selling 'em!

URRRRRRRR! I hate crushers!

We just give our old computers to schools.

Is there much of a market for iMacs? I know a guy who works at my old university in their IT department, he told me all the old machines (he works with macs only in his area) that are no longer fixable are sent to the local prison to seperate the circuitboards from the plastic and metal (which is recycled). They do not sell or give away any of the computer parts (working or not). He did snag me some working PRAM batteries before some early G4s got recycled.

There is a bit - schools who still need Mac OS 9 capable computers to run educational software, and people who don't have computers, and who could really do with a cheap, reliable basic internet computer. There's also me and another Mac guy I know at uni, and I'm sure that the IT guy (who is also a Mac user) would've loved to have "disposed" of one into the boot of his car. 😉 I just think its stupid that they disposed of what could've been a couple of hundred bucks worth of gear (there were at least 15 - 20 P3s also). Businesses are stupid...they get pissy since they can't meet their profit goals, then they literally go and throw money away. Had they sent an email out to the all students mailing list offering them for sale, they would've made a nice tidy little bit of money - when you send computers to the crusher, they don't really start to be worth much until you start talking by the ton.

Onto brighter news though, the RAM works great - I'm on the BritPC right now, with the extra RAM installed, typing this. XP certainly seems a lot more responsive with the extra RAM - it had 320 before. 🙂

I'll tell you an even sadder story...

When I was at Illinois State, the physics department had oodles of 5-flavors macs for program and simulation modeling. They replaced them with G4's and G5's, some were recycled, but more than a few got 'chucked.' Google: Morton Pumkin Chucking. We launched a couple ~200ft with our trebuchet. Don't worry, they all had screens that were too far gone to tune up.
