| Boot problem with my Apple IIe |
Posted by: MacOS on 2008-03-09 14:10:56 I have a problem with an Apple IIe I just bought.
It does start with a usual "Apple ][" Screen,
but when a floppy drive is attached the drive starts to run
but it seems not to boot the System.
I get some notes on the screen like:
39DA A=FF X=8E Y=00 P=B6 S=D7
(see photo bellow) and the drive stops after one second and stays silent.
If I use a DOS Master disk I get other notes as I use another "Autoboot" Disk. But the notes stay the same if I use the same disk.
I took out all cards, tried another Apple II Disk Interface, a second drive...
The problem still exists - it seems to be the Logic Board.
Does anyone can explain whats wrong with my Apple IIe ?

It is a French version of the Apple ][e - if I use the switch on the case under the keyboard the Apple starts with an"Apple ยง*" Screen.
Is this the usual start screen for the french Apple IIe?

It could be other things but with out a known good disk you can not tell. Try after you booting the system master disk. That is after the red light goes out. Leave the disk in and type CATALOG in caps. If it comes up with a list then it is good. No take that disk out and put in on of the others and type CATALOG again. See if anything comes up.
Take Care

Posted by: luddite on 2008-03-09 15:15:08 Try starting up without a disk (hit control-reset while the drive is spinning). You should get the "]" applesoft prompt.
Usually a bad disk will dump you into the monitor... I think bad memory or something wrong with the mobo would more likely result in random crap on the screen.
If you can't startup without a disk, you might try reseating all the socketed chips (very carefully).

When I press the CTRL + Reset keys when the disk spinns I get a
] + blinking coursor.
I tried several Systems and Disks.
I get always the notes, but they change if I use different disk.

I have used Disks that I also use with my other Apples, they work on the other ones.
When I type CATALOG after seeing the notes - nothing happends.
I get a ] + blinking coursor after pressing Enter.
When I press CTRL + Reset keys when the disk spinns
and I get the Apple ] prompt and I type CATALOG
I get a SYNTAX ERROR after pressing Enter.

Posted by: MacOS on 2008-03-09 16:09:47 After few minutes of beeing under power...
I heared a popping sound.
Then I saw smoke comming out of the power supply.
... seems that there are several problems with my Apple.
Now the PS seems to have given up.
I need to look inside the PS what happened,
here is some plastic burning smell in the air...
Does anyone have an unused Apple IIe power supply (220 volt) in the shed?
