| Pair of Icebooks |
Posted by: cinemafia on 2008-03-03 11:59:12 First real conquest in quite a while, but a good one. I came into two iBook G3s that were otherside going to be trashed, though both have hardware problems.
First is a 12", 800Mhz/128MB/30GB/Combo
It's got some serious video bus issues...after a short while of use the LCD display goes black and no signal goes out from the external adapter, either. Otherwise, it's probably okay...maybe I could turn it into a server...?
Second is a 14", 600Mhz/256MB/20GB/Combo
This one has a non-working optical drive and wonky LCD. There's a bright green line down the middle and an off-color bar down the left side, as well as tell-tale stress cracks at the bottom of the display. External video works fine, though.
Neither of them have AC adapters, so I'm borrowing the one from my daughter's iBook G4 to charge them up and play around with them. I'm going to clean them up and try to get them to some kind of working state, though I don't know what I'm really going to do with them. If anyone's interested in them for parts or otherwise, let me know!

Posted by: wood_e on 2008-03-03 12:36:19 Your video issues might be caused by a disconnect at the graphics chip. Shim the chip with some cardboard and see if that fixes the video.

Nice score on the icebooks tho'.

Posted by: Christopher on 2008-03-03 21:26:31 How much for the 30GB and comb drive?
|
Posted by: cinemafia on 2008-03-06 05:44:49 I did a clean install of 10.4 with all the updates on both machines via firewire disk mode from my Mini, and other than their respective issues they're running good. Forgot to mention both have airport cards, as well. Heavymetal, hold that thought...I'm thinking of trying to drop by an AppleStore and see if I can get the 12" fixed under the extended replacement program, since it does exhibit the scrambled video before death symptoms. Otherwise I may try to fix it myself.

Posted by: wood_e on 2008-03-06 10:47:00 I doubt you'll be in for the program, but it's worth a check. Opening the icebook isn't a big deal. Shimming the chip is easy too...

Posted by: cinemafia on 2008-03-07 12:56:20 The serial does fall under the program guidelines, and I called Apple and surprisingly they said it does still qualify for the comp repair. I'm going to swing by an Apple Store tomorrow and see what happens! As for the 14", that one is up for grabs, and I will take pics of it later today so you all can see the condition of the LCD...if anybody ends up wanting it, feel free to make me an offer!
;D

Posted by: tomlee59 on 2008-03-07 15:34:31 That is amazing. I thought that the repair program ended long ago (even after being extended at least once). That's great news -- hopefully, it will last a good long time after the repair.

Posted by: cinemafia on 2008-03-09 09:13:11 Well, okay...I guess the program did end, sometime last year. [xx(] ]'>
However, the Genius Bar manager at the Apple Store store felt bad that the rep on the phone said I could still get it fixed and had me go through the trouble of going all the way down there for nothing. So, he gave me a case number and put some notes on the account and said to call Apple again and get to a manager, then plead my case that I was given the expectation of getting it fixed. Who knows, it might work!
Meanwhile, here's some pics of the 14" in case anybody's interested in it:

Posted by: Patrickool93 on 2008-03-09 10:03:25 If you want to get rid of one of the AP cards cheap, like $25-30, PM me. If not, oh well, I tried.

Posted by: cinemafia on 2008-03-09 10:06:35 Thanks Patrick, if no one's interested in the full 14" after a few days I may let you have one of them!

|
Posted by: bubbleman7546 on 2008-03-10 20:30:38 is it the opaque model or the translucent one? if it's translucent, i might want it for a mod...
|
Posted by: bubbleman7546 on 2008-03-11 07:47:32 Heck, even if it isn'n, I'll still take it. Use it as a take-to-school lappy. I could deal with the lines on the screen.

Posted by: cinemafia on 2008-03-15 09:42:06 Sorry folks, the 14" got bought by a local. Not certain on the fate of the 12", yet.
