I've successfully installed Leopard on my Cube! I did the OF trick to make the machine think it had the right processor.

It's pretty enjoyable. It's just about as fast as Tiger was, with the exception of the dock. When it's in the 3D reflective mode, it's slow as heck.
With the 2D dock and no magnification, the Cube runs a lot like Tiger does.

What video card do you have in it? Sorry, I thought I posted a reply. It's whatever's stock (Rage 128). I haven't upgraded it.
I want this on my G3 iBook. Actually, that sounds like a fun project. Anyone know if Leopard just refuses to run on a G3, or if it's just another variable in the "badMachines" string?
If it's just a string, then might be able to be done by FW disk mode. Hmm...

i did the same thing to my 733MHz Digital Audio awhile back. Growl is insanely slower, but everything else runs pretty much the same. I have a GeForce 3 64mb card in there and the dock really doesn't slow down much at all.

What you want is a DX9 compatible card with a Mac ROM, preferably with at least 64 Megs of memory to pick up the speed of Leopard with all the bells and whistles turned on. Basically a Radeon 9500-9800 or X800/850 or a nVidia 5500 or higher. The 5200 technically meets the specification, but is just so slow it probably wouldn't be worth it. I think the Cube has a 2x AGP slot, so you'll have to get a 2x/4x card. I don't think 8x cards work in 2x slots. Yeah, before anyone says it, I know DX9 doesn't apply to Macs, but that's the easiest way to describe which cards will work under Core Image/Core Animation. You may also have to do some modding to get any video card with a cooling fan to duct air properly in the confines of a Cube and do some electrical mods if you want to use a card that draws additional power from a molex connector.

It worked on my iMac G4/800 too. Installed Leopard off the original DVD with Zero fuss.
I'm also delighted to announce that the Leopard Graphics Update for 10.5.2 has solved the bugs that stopped GeForce 2.4MX cards working right, specifically crashing to a white screen on wake from sleep, and displaying a plain white screen or a frozen copy of the desktop instead of a screen saver.
So I am a happy camper, all in all. I also have to say the Screen Sharing using 2 10.5 machines is a GREAT deal faster than 10.5 to 10.4. It looks kinda crummy because of the compression, but the trade off is much more responsiveness. It's good enough to be able to watch the VU meters in iTunes move in full realtime. Impressive 🙂

I use ARD 3.0 (which I paid for, the unlimited version).
I get better screen redraw, overall snappy improvement and I can admin the machine.
Screen sharing is great for at home. However when I need to work on clients machines, or grab info from my machine at home it is ARD 3 to the rescue.
For some reason I can't get screen sharing to work over the internet, but it works just fine on my LAN at home. Normally this would be a problem, but then again I have ARD 3.
I highly suggest that you fellow webmasters and IT folk get a copy. It is pure awesome.

I tried it on my stock cube and man it was slow... Flury looked the same as panthers flury on a 333mhz g3 powerbook. Now back to tiger it is much more stable. I guess I will have to wait till I win the lotto so I can buy a cpu upgrade ect. 🙁 (not to mention I have to find a new board for my 17" lcd monitor so the brightness and usb ports will be revived)

They couldn't really remove G3 code, since the only difference between a G3 and a G4 (code-wise) is the addition of AltiVec. So at worst, they turned off AltiVec-skipping routines.
But yes, Leopard absolutely requires AltiVec (or SSE on Intel.) Which means G4 or G5 only on the PPC side. From what I have read, a Pismo upgraded to a G4 will run Leopard, but if you slap the stock G3 back in, it fails to boot. (This is unlike the OpenFirmware trick, which is only tricking the installer, not the actual runtime OS.)
