| Apple IIgs |
Posted by: MacMan on 2008-03-01 17:13:29 After playing with the idea of getting an Apple II for a long time I eventually bought an Apple IIgs on eBay. It came from America and I bought just the IIgs unit with a 1MB RAM expansion. It is a ROM 01 machine. It works fine in the UK with an electrical transformer (the IIgs is single voltage only, unlike most Macs).
It is now working and I managed to cobble up an RGB adaptor so that I can use one of my Microvitec CUB monitors with it. The CUB screens were designed for use with BBC and Acorn computers of the same era as the IIgs. The next task is to get some software and games downloaded for it! 😀

Posted by: MacMan on 2008-03-02 03:54:02 It is a 14" screen so is a bit bigger than the IIgs-specific monitor. The screen refresh was very visible in that photo but I managed to get the 'grey band' at the bottom of it's sweep so you can see the main picture (apart from the horrendous screen glare formt eh camera flash). I need to play about with the controls a little so the picture fills the screen a bit more.

How much was shipping from US to Scotland? Must have been a ton. It was about US $60, which translated to £30 in my money (the dollar is weak at the moment against the pound). It is more expensive than shipping within the UK but even with the shipping cost you wouldn't be able to buy a working IIgs with RAM upgrade in the UK for less than what I paid for the setup (a little under £50). Also, IIgs' in the UK are hen's teeth and I have only ever seen one or two on eBay in the last couple of years, and they have gone for stupid prices.
