| UGH! Installing 7.6 on Quadra 605... |
Posted by: wood_e on 2008-02-24 12:01:34 So yesterday I got a Quadra 605 (among other things). I cleaned it out a bit, installed a full blown 040 and an ethernet card, and am trying to install 7.6 from a burned CD.
It won't boot off my LaCie external SCSI CDRW drive, so I put in a 7.5 startup CD and put the 7.6 Apple CD extension on it. The installer program runs, but right after the Color Stylewriter 1500 profile it exits with "an error occured".
Right now I'm burning another one to see if it works...
We'll see...

I installed Norton 3 on it for benchmarks and it's 8 points higher than a Quadra 700.

Posted by: Quadraman on 2008-02-24 18:24:07 I find it hard to believe a Q605 would benchmark higher than a Q700 since they both run at 25mhz. All of LEMs benchmarks show them running at the same speed.

Posted by: wood_e on 2008-02-24 19:27:30 The only part my 605 beat out the 700 on was disk. Everything else was on par - I have a 4GB drive in there... probably 5400rpm... it kicked the butt on most of norton's benchmarked macs.

Posted by: bigD on 2008-02-24 19:28:10 I'm unfamiliar with Norton - how much faster is "8 points"? If it's a reasonably small amount, there are tons of things that can account for the difference.

Posted by: wood_e on 2008-02-24 20:28:57 8 points isn't much at all. A quadra 700 is 100 and this system clocked in at 108 only because of the disk score.
|
Posted by: MacMan on 2008-02-25 03:19:20 That does tend to happen when a newer hard disk is installed. My Performa 475 scores much higher than it should simply because the 1GB hard drive is faster than Apple's original spec. It is let down though by the lack of an FPU (it has the original 680LC40).

Posted by: wood_e on 2008-02-25 05:14:40 I might have another full 040 if you'd like it... [🙂] ]'>

I don't know about that. For one thing the memory would be faster with the 72 pin ram on the 605. The video subsystem would likely be faster also on the 605.
